Old Nokomis — 1975 Nokomis High School Nokomis, Illinois Volume LVIII Jo Ann Keller — Editor Jean Ann Weber — Assistant Editor Mrs. Nancy Carlock — Sponsor Memories Memories are made of things That happen every day Moments as we live them Things we do or say. Little bits and pieces Of laughter Mixed with tears Paragraphs and pages Written through the years. The carefree days of childhood The growing pains of youth A few illusions shattered In the endless search for truth. 2 Opening Each one a separate chapter That is printed on the mind. We can't erase the sadness Or edit out the tears We can’t undo the wrongs we’ve done We can’t relive the years. WELCOME cntrancc With the beginning of a new year the 1974-75 Old Nokomis Annual Staff welcomed a new sponsor, Mrs. Nancy Carlock. It was a new experience for both her and the staff members. Instead of outside work, a daily classroom was provided to assemble and use their ideas to the fullest extent so the student body would be satisfied and cherish their yearbook. All through the year, their efforts, like anything else tried for the first time, were a challenge. They devoted their school time taking pictures for the students to have something to look forward to. The old tradition was broken of producing the same yearbook year after year and it was decided to have certain pictures in color. Color in the yearbook brought more work for the annual staff members. Many outside projects were conducted to finance the 1975 yearbook. Although it was a different situation, it proved to be a success. They participated in sports such as softball, badminton, basketball, bowling, volleyball, and archery. This year they added something different to G.A. A. They started out by giving the Freshmen a cook-out consisting of a scavenger hunt to bring more membership into the group. Then they had a bicycling trip to Sportsmans Lake, which turned out to be a lot of fun for everybody. Later on they attended a G.A.A. playday in Hillsboro. On March 6, the girls held a Daddy-Daughter Night, which also proved to be successful. They played golf putty, bowled, blind volleyball, and many more exciting games. The Mother-Daughter Banquet was held for all G.A.A. members and they received awards for the points they achieved. Scenes from G.A.A. VARIETY SHOW SCENES Director hard at work. The band had another successful year under the supervision of Mr. Davito. They played at football games, basketball games, and pep sessions, overcoming the handicap of having a small band. With the advantage of having a small group, Mr. Davito was able to work exclusively with individuals to make his performance outstanding in the field of music. This year the band played such songs as, Manchester England, Saturday in the Park, Rock Around the Clock, and Crocodile Rock. On December 15, the band participated in the Winter Concert and provided many seasonal songs. Instead of a Spring Concert or Musical, the band provided the music for a Variety Show along with the chorus, where anyone in the student body could participate. This turned out to be a big success. The band ended a successful year as they performed at graduation on May 23. WHOOPS! Sing it, Tom. Big Betty shows her stuff. Mrs. Olson looking on. Hobo stealing the show. Chorus hard at work. The Nokomis High School Choir led by Mrs. Maxine Tosetti had a very busy and musical year. The fall was filled with practices for the annual tour, in which this year they performed at Raymond, Stonington, and Morrisonville. During the winter months the chorus sponsored their Christmas concert, with the Songsters entertaining the little kids with Big Bird! The jr. high band and chorus combined their Christmas concert with the high school. When spring arrived they sponsored a new type of entertainment with the band, The Variety Show.” The whole school was eligible to participate in this show. Finishing a very successful year, the chorus sang a fitting arrangement at Baccalaureate. The sport includes running practice at about 3.3 miles every night. At the actual meets, the team runs 2.8 miles. Roger Archibald set the record with the time of 13.49. Our first meet was a success. We won 21 to 37 running against Mulberry Grove. The meets later had hard competition and the guys tried but failed to succeed in winning. The final meet was a triangular meet against Hillsboro and Mt. Olive with Nokomis coming in second. The team did very well for the first year of having Cross-Country at NHS. There was a good turn out with 15 guys going out. Fieldbinder The Nokomis Redskins finished the 1974 season with a 4-5 record. This was a very respectable record for the Redskins since many underclassmen were relied upon to hold down offensive and defensive positions. This experience will be very helpful for next year's team. The Redskins worked out all summer and started double session practices a week before school began. They were physically and mentally ready for the opener against Pana under the Coaching of Bill Vangel. Coach Vangel did a fine job in his first year at Nokomis. Highlights of the season were the 65-0 trouncing of Riverton at the homecoming game, and the victory over Staunton the second time in 27 years. Bud Foster rushed for 836 yards, and was leading scorer with 60 points. Mike Adden caught 22 passes for 245 yards. Randy Frazier had 89 tackles. Tom Spears led with 4 interceptions, and Andy Jackson had 8 quarterback sacks for 59 yards. The Redskins were rated among the top six schools in the AP and UPI state polls, and first in the Decatur area. The boys remained undefeated throughout the regular season winning the Vandalia tournament, the Litchfield tournament, and the conference trophy. (Winning all 12 conference games). They played very consistently all year, with the hard pressing, scrappy defense holding opponents to a mere 48 points while averaging 65 points themselves. The Redskins played their best ball in the Litchfield tournament beating Greenville, 72-50, Jerseyville, 80-49, and Highland, 75-53, for the championship, all being Class AA schools. Other highlights of the season were the victories over Morrisonville, 60-41, and Chatham-Glenwood, 69-54; both teams which made it to the state playoffs in Champaign where they were eliminated in the first round. After the regular season, the Redskins kept their winning ways by winning the Nokomis Regional beating Mt. Olive, 79-46, and Gillespie for the third time 64-49, in the championship game. Advancing to the sectional tournament at Vandalia, where the competition began to get much stiffer, the spirit was high not only in the players but in the fans also. The Nokomis Fans packed the east side of the Vandalia gym 2,000 strong. When the Redskins came onto the floor, they received standing ovations. The cheering, yelling, and excitement mounted and the Redskins answered with a victory over Lebanon in the first game; pulling out of a halftime deficit to outscore them in the second half to win. Then came the big game with 2nd-ranked Venice against 5th-ranked Nokomis. Before the game, the Redskins felt they could and would beat Venice. From the time of the first tip-off, the pressure was stifling. Some people believe the state championship game was played that night. Venice was ahead at halftime. The second half the Redskins fought back to within one point with 1:42 seconds left, but with the pressure and cold shooting the Redskins missed field goals and free throws, their last chance for victory. When the final buzzer sounded, the Redskins had lost their first game. Cold shooting had haunted the Redskins, shooting a mere 28%. Many people felt the better team had lost. But they lost to the best because Venice went on to win the state title. Individuals honors through the season went to Greg Parsons and Mark Franzen - all Vandalia Tournament team, Mark Franzen and Earl Alexander - all conference team, Darold Johnson, Greg Parsons, and Steve Gonet - honorable mention all conference team, Darold Johnson and Mark Franzen - all WSMI area team, Mark Franzen - all Decatur area team, Earl Alexander - rebounding trophy, Mike Adden - free throw percentage trophy, and Mark Franzen - best defense trophy. Among their various duties, they promoted sports events, boosted spirits at games, and pep rallies. During the year, the cheerleaders had a coat check and sold a variety of things to help with the cost of their uniforms. The cheerleaders cheered for the wrestling team for the first time. The varsity team was undefeated during their regular season. They defeated Morrisonville, Hillsboro, Mt. Olive, Raymond, Litchfield, Carlinville, Gillespie, Staunton, and Bunker Hill. S. Showing that school spirit still exists, the Student Council sponsored a full week of Homecoming activities. Spirit Week opened with Hat Day following with Security Day, Slogan Day, Inside-Out Day, and ending with Color Day. The most spirited activity of Homecoming was the making of the banners by classes and organizations. On Wednesday night the traditional bonfire was held with cardboard boxes because somebody got fired up a little early and burned the pile of wood Tuesday night. After the traditional snakedance, the judging of the banners was held and the Sophomore class proved to be the winner. On Friday night the big game was held and the Redskins with the help of many fans went for a 65-0 victory over Riverton. The day of May 23rd turned out to be one of beautiful clear blue skies. The dream was about to come true until a semitrailer truck ran into the football bleachers making it impossible to hold graduation outside. With many mixed emotions, the Class of 75 entered the gym for the last time together. Many memories of the past four years flashed through their minds along with the uncertainties of what the future would bring. The invocation was given by Reverend David Miley, followed by the band selection Hosanna. Mary Ann Havera and Susan Merriman, salutatorians, delivered their speeches and Carol Poteet Coady, valedictorian, presented the final speech saying, Class of 75, we’ve made it. Mr. Larry Janes, high school principal, announced the honor students who had attained a 4.5 grade average while attending NHS. He also presented the Nokomis High School Class of 1975 to the people. Upon the class presentation, diplomas were awarded by Mr. Wilmer Johnson, President of the Board of Education. Reverend Miley gave the benediction and the band sounded the final song Proud Heritage while the Class of 75 made the final march. After the exercises, the seniors realized it was a dream come true after-all. The dream of being recognized as young adults and beginning the long journey up the ladder of success. Class of 75, we’ve made it. Preparation for the final steps. 102 Activities but Really Just Beginning Junior marshalls lead seniors in. Seniors bow their heads in prayer Hey guys, the camera is this way! It's graduation and it's unbelievable that I'm here. They’ll call my name in a few minutes, and I'll walk up to receive my diploma . . . where do I go from there? I’ve always had the security of the school routine and its activities, surrounded by the friends I was so familiar with. Now we'll all be going in different directions, and 1 wonder how long it will be before the memories that meant so much start to fade. After twelve years of this you would think I would be ready to move on, but I feel like I'm leaving a pan of me behind. Maybe that's good though, because I really have changed in the four years that I’ve been here. Well, pretty soon they'll get to my name. Then I'll be up there, and it'll be all over. In a way, I guess everything’s really just beginning. Look back upon this school year as a great one of association with people who made it so. Memories Are Something 106 Closing Never to be Forgotten Closing 107 f • As I wait for graduation day to come, I look back on the past years with a smile. To actually think that time has really passed by me so quickly. You do not realize how important your last year of school is, until it is almost gone. When I think of leaving all my friends behind, I think to myself I am not really losing them, for they will forever stay in my memory. It is really frightening to think that just in a short time, I will be out in the world all alone. Fighting for what I believe in, meeting new people, changing my ways, and most of all, trying to liv' 'this hectic world. It is like you are at the edge of a mountain and someone is there, ready to push you over. Life is the same feeling. You choose what you want for the rest of your life, remembering that you have to live with it good or bad. I do not think there is one Senior who s not afraid of taking that step-----forward to success or falling down to failure. A Senior means being a little older and a little wiser than we were before. We have a lot of responsibilities and decisions to make. Senior pictures, graduation invitations, scholarships, awards, caps and gowns, and graduation itself are j6st a few examples of what Seniors have to go through. The question is what to do with your life after you graduate. All these problems must be solved and then you are on your way to a brand new experience. I CAN'T WAIT!
