There were many factors working against the team this year. Lack of experience was probably the most damaging. Nine sophomores were depended upon to either start or see action in some pan of the game. Also, the loss of four key players hurt quite a bit. But the whole team tried hard and one of the captains, Pari Blazich made the All Conference second team, of which he can be proud. The Redskins opened the season with a bang as they rolled over Sesser with a score of 17-0. Then the team ran into trouble and the string of losses Jachino, 55 - Rusty Skinner, 72 - Dan Patton, 30 - Tony Fox, Coach Leitschuh, 71 - Perry Hopwood, 51 - Alan Pretnar, 75 - John Dachauer, 71 - Pete Cesaretti, 35 - Scott Battles, Coach Fieldbinder, 66 - Tony Hard piled up until the game against Maroa where the Nokomis defense went to work and stopped Maroa from scoring. The game ended in a 0-0 tie. The season may have been disappointing but it wasn't in vain because next year's team will be one-year older with one year’s experience behind them, and once again the feeling of victory will be ours. 73 Redskins On Top Again, No Surprise ROW 1: Coach Fieldbinder, Vince Keller, Mark Franzen, Tim Hall, Doug Braye, Roger Archibald, Steve Gonet, Ron DeWerff. ROW 2: Coach Craft, Earl Alexander, Tony Strazar, Greg Parsons, Karl Johnson, Mike Adden, Randy Frazier, Coach Wallace, Mike McCall. A winning basketball season is expected now days in Nokomis and this year proved to be no exception . When the season started, Nokomis was expected to be left out of the conference because last year’s starting five had all graduated and most of the remaining players were inexperienced. Our first four losses were caused primarily by inexperience and a lack of self-confidence. Nokomis then started to gain confidence with the win against Southwestern. Then the big game came against North Greene. Our team not only brought back to Nokomis a win but a trophy also. After three more wins Nokomis went to the Litchfield Tourney where we lost the Consolation-championship game by a mere four points. Nokomis fans couldn't forget the game against Carlinville where a hard fought victory tied us with Carlinville and Stauton for First in the Conference. Then came the State Tourney. The Regional was played in Litchfield where we beat Gillespie in the first game. Next as the championship was getting closer, we went up against Stauton and won. Then came the big one. The reward of the season was winning the IHSA Class A District at Ml. Olive. The varsity squad was made up of four seniors: Ray Kamer, Tony Hard, Steve Braye, and Scott Battles. Three of these boys, Scott, Tony, and Steve, have participated four years since the beginning of the program at Nokomis High School. During the year one new record was set. Tony Hard had the most takedowns of 15 over last year's of 14. For the short time wrestling has been an organized sport here, it has earned increasing recognition from the fans. We look to the years ahead for even more participation and continued success. 82 Individual Records W L 98 lbs Rick Kroeger 8 5 105 lbs Tom Muir 11 2 112 lbs Craig Cassidy 9 6 119 lbs Bill Schweizer 8 9 126 lbs Ray Kamer 9 3 132 lbs Tony Hard 11 4 138 lbs Steve Braye 14 4 145 lbs Mike Stombaugh 3 5 145 lbs Steve DeWerff 1 7 155 lbs Scott Battles 9 6“ 167 lbs Rusty Skinner 3 9 185 lbs Alan Pretnar 5 7 HWT Joe Umberger 1 9 “Vandalia Tournament scores not included DRAW 2 1 In the Vandalia Tournament, Steve Braye placed second, Tom Muir, Scott Battles, and Alan Pretnar placed third. Weather played a huge factor in this year's baseball schedule. Only playing ten games, the Baseball Redskins turned in a season 2-8. Just as the team members were psyched-up for their next game, rain would fall. Even though the season was hampered, individual records showed that the baseball team did have its share of talent, Kevin O'Malley led the team in runs with five, sacrifices with three, and had the highest overall batting average of .333. A1 Pretnar led the field in times at bat, with 32, and hits, with five. Steve Jachino copped honors with five hits, and Steve Gonet led the way of base on balls with eight. In the pitching department, Randy Frazier led the way with seven games pitched, 38 innings pitched, two wins, and 46 strikeouts. Statistics such as these showed that even though a season's record may not be all that impressive, there can be an abundance of talent contained in the team. Our baseball team is a prime example. After being defeated by the Pana team, the girls went on to compete at the District meet, where they placed 7th out of 23 teams. Janelle Janssen placed 4th in the discus and was able to advance to the State meet in Charleston, but didn't place. 86 Go! Pushing for a win Runners to your mark Cold or something? Get Set . . . Each year it becomes more surprising that those who choose track as a sport endeavor, provide NHS with an excellent track team. Surprising because, even though our school has no track field, this sport brings with it each year individual and school pride. This year proved to be no exception. It was no surprise at all that Tim Hall set another record for the two-mile an impressive time of 10:39.5. Each year Tim always manages to better himself, thus the team. Earl Alexander set a record in the 880-yard-dash with a time of 2:08. Another record set was by Mark Franzen in the 330-yard low hurdles with a time of 43.4 seconds. With hopes of what our own track will someday be, young men will continue to train themselves both physically and mentally for the gruelling sport of track. No doubt they will continue to supply our school with their impressive talents. 88 And they're off! Me coach? As homecoming week came to a close the NHS student body had many pleasurable memories to look upon. Spirit Week opened with Hat Day” following with Redskin Day”, Teenie Bopper Day , Tee Shirt and Jeans Day , and ending with the traditional Color Day . On Thursday night the student body, teachers, and Redskin fans paraded through the streets in the annual Snakedance, after which a huge bonfire was lit and the fans shouted cheers and sang the ' 'school song.'' On Friday night the big game was held and much to our dismay the Redskins were downed by the Mt. Olive Wildcats. Even though our team had lost in a hard-fought game, these spirits did not dampen the atmosphere at the Homecoming Dance held Saturday night in the school cafeteria. The theme of the Dance was Let Your Love Grow and Kristy Wise and Alan Sanders were crowned Queen and King of the 1973 Homecoming. The Rock Road Band provided music of the Sixties and Seventies at the well-attended dance. Refreshments of cake and soft drinks were served by members of the student council and the 1973 Homecoming came to a close. 1973 reigning King and Queen, Alan Sanders and Kristy Wise. 94 row Retiring Queen, Cheryl Schwarm, crowning the new 1973 Homecoming Queen, Kristy Wise. This year proved to be no exception. On the evening of May 4, the Junior-Senior Prom was held in the school cafeteria after much elaborate decorating by the Junior class. The setting was beautifully decorated with colors of pink, blue, and yellow, which featured a small bridge entrance, paper chandelier and glass ball, and a fountain located behind the throne. Music for the night was provided by Rock Road Band. With mixed emotions, 100 boys and girls nervously paced the halls, laughing and crying - happy yet sad, looking at each other, realizing that no matter how many future reunions might be held, this was the last time they would all be together. Yesterday's dream was tonight's realization. The invocation was given by Reverend B. Fairest Kincaid, which was followed by the band playing a selection, The Masterpiece.'' It was then time for the Salutatorian, Neil Parker, and the Valedictorian, Heidi Bogle, to deliver their speeches. Both got straight to the point, putting it in a way which revealed many happy memories of the past four years, yet making their classmates wonder about the future. Mr. Ron Shawgo announced the Top Ten students of the senior class who had maintained a 4.5 average during their four years at NHS. This was followed by the presentation of diplomas by Mr. Wilmer Johnson, President of the Board of Education. The benediction was given by Reverend Kincaid. The band struck up the final march, Proud Heritage, and the Class of '74 marched away from their chairs, some smiling through the tears. Leaving the gymnasium, one suddenly realized the clouds overhead had been replaced by bright, shining stars. This must surely be a sign of good things to come. These were yesterday's children - leaders of tomorrow. Presenting the Class of 1974. 102 This Way Again Valedictorian. Graduation. The year has ended. Our lives have just begun. As individuals we must search for identity and strive for excellence. 106 Our role is simple ... we learn ... we give . . . and we learn new extensions of ourselves. During our high school days, we have learned and we have given. Now it is time to extend. We descend the stairs of childhood and young adult life. We rise from the bleachers and heed our callings. The past was real, confusing at times, yet always unpredictable. The future is there. It can be grasped and made worthwhile. We have experienced the past, we are surviving in the present, and we must live in the future. Enjoy life. Love life.
