Nokomis High School Nokomis, Illinois Volume LVI Barb Stauder — editor Neil Parker — assistant editor Mrs. Beverly Simons and Miss Joyce Clark — advisors Old Nokomis — nineteen hundred seventy-three REFLECTIONS Reflections of a year past. . . Filled with memories of both good and bad. Reflections that recall the people we have known, lessons we have learned, and activities in which we have been a part. 4 Remembering . . . our first football victory against Pana, and the last seconds in the Regionals. The joy of a week out of school for snow and ice, and the disappointment of a censored Duckburg Times. There were the wasted Mondays, and the joyful Fridays. 5 Still. . . The final days came, the tests were given, the Seniors were graduated. It was a year we will long remember with hopes for the years to come to be as meaningful as we reflect into the future not knowing yet believing. 6 In Memory SUSAN MARIE BROOKSHIRE I walked a mile with Pleasure; She chattered all the way. But left me none the wiser For all she had to say. I walked a mile with Sorrow And ne'er a word said she; But oh, the things I learned from her When Sorrow walked with mel ROBERT BROWNING HAMILTON Opening.......................2 Administration................9 Faculty......................13 Classes .....................21 Organizations................67 Fall.........................87 W’nter.......................97 Spring......................113 ADMINISTRATION Tenderly now let all men turn to the earth Nancy Newhall Mr. Wood and the School Board — an Efficient Team Mr. Wood, in his first year of service as Superintendent of Unit District 22, has started with what we hope will be a long career. His hard work and concern for N.H.S. has won him the respect of the community and of the students. Along with him work the members of the School Board in coordinating the schools of Unit District 22. Mr. Fred Fesser is President of the School Board with others members, including Mr. Ken Wiseman, Mr. Dale Houck, Mr. Eugene Johnson, Mr. James Funk, Fr. Carl Spears, and Mr. Wilmer Johnson. RONALD SHAWGO Mr. Shawgo — a Job Well Done As principal of Nokomis High School, Mr. Shawgo deserves a pat on tbe back for work well done. In his first year at N.H.S., he has shown an interest in the welfare of students both individually and as a whole. One of his major jobs has been working with the faculty in providing a comprehensive program of study. He made an effort to establish a successful line of communication with the students so they knew they could go directly to him at any time with any problem. With his tell it like it is attitude, he has earned the respect of all at N.H.S. Congratulations for a job well done. victor a. McCracken Students Look to Mr. McCracken for Guidance The students of Nokomis High School have learned that they can count on Mr. McCracken when they need help. He assists them in arranging testing and in making their choice of a college or university. He works hard helping schedule classes and preparing students for their future plans. At the beginning of the year, the Band, dressed in new uniforms purchased by the Booster Club, could be seen performing at football games. After football season concluded, the Band hung up their marching shoes and started on music to keep the fans entertained at basketball games. Then, when the Music Department announced that the musical this year would be “Fiddler On the Roof,” the Band began groping for bits of the Russian atmosphere and accompanied the cast as they never had before. But, no, the Band didn’t stop after the musical was over. They went on to work on “Man of La Mancha” and “Selections from Shaft” for the Spring Concert and Graduation. The work for these was well worth it when they received a standing ovation for “Shaft” and played an encore of it. Chrisman, J. Trelz, E. Ovca, B. Stauder, K. Kocur, D. Dahler. 69 Our director at work. I believe The Nokomis High School Chorus sang their way through a very successful year. Under the direction of Mrs. Maxine Tosetti, they completed a successful tour in the fall to Vandalia, Brownstown, and St. Elmo. They presented an entertaining program of popular songs including “One Tin Soldier” and “Joy to the World” which was accompanied by Jane Bertolino on guitar and Jim Stivers on drum. The chorus played an important part in the presentation of the musical “Fiddler On the Roof ' not only in vocal parts but also in behind the scenes preparation. May was filled with practices for their spring appearance. The Spring Concert was held May 24, with the chorus program including two Burt Bacharach arrangements. At Baccalaureate they sang a fitting arrangement of “Amazing Grace.” FRONT ROW: R. Adams, M. Flemming, C. Keele, M. Bolte, P. Oiler, M. Carlock, C. Bolte, D. Clark, L. Lehnen, L. Lehnen, F. This year they were accompanied by Barb Stauder on the piano and Jane Bertolino on the guitar. 71 On Tour Songsters perform one of their numbers on tour. 72 St. Elmo students enjoying One Tin Soldier ABOVE: Diana Hub«r, Karen Tester, Tereasa Adden, Carol Pieper, Kay Johnson, Linda Shallenberger, Down Hart, Carla Keele, Pat Huber, Betty Keating, Terry Epley, and Dara Sanders Pacesetters Perform for Parades and Games The Pacesetters put in another year of entertaining shows for the Nokomis High School. This year the girls were under the direction of Miss Dolores Gowen. The selected girls learn routines and perform them with the N.H.S. band at parades and football games. The Pacesetter shows provide nice entertainment at half-time for the football fans. Dara Sanders was voted by the girls to be the head Pacesetter of the group. 73 Our land of plenty has to be cultivated and tilled to produce crops. Animals must be raised properly and brought to market to provide food for the people of America. This is the basic fundamental that • the FFA learn and put into practice. Probably no other group gets so close to the “good earth. The Poultry Judging Team won 4th place in Section 19 and 8th in State. In Dairy Judging the Nokomis team won 2nd place and the Soils Judging Team placed 8th in the Section. The Nokomis teams placed 1 st out of 19 teams in all judging contests. For the first time in five years, we had two State Farmers, Marlin Quattlander and Steve Schweizer, and two production winners. They are Steve DeWerff in poultry and Steve Schweizer in dairy. The school newspaper, the Duckburg Times led by Miss Alfrejd, Advisor; and Diann Mehochko, Editor; underwent a recycling period. The staff awakened the dormant Pow Wow by changing the name, adding many new sections, including a very controversial editorial page, complete sports coverage, a taste of the Fine Arts, and even a bit of humor. The staff set and completed their goals with the publication of their 11 th issue on May 18. Editor, Diann Mehochko discusses the latest issue with Sponsor, Miss Alfrejd. FIRST ROW: D. Sanders, D. Listening to the students' grievances, they work with the administration and faculty to make better relationships. Under the leadership of President, Dave Stewart and assisted by Mr. David DeChenne, they sponsored the Homecoming and Valentine Dances. Through their efforts, the lunch system was revised and soda machines were acquired for the gym lobby. They also held an exchange day with Raymond High School. Through the Student Council, government is represented at N.H.S. President, Dave Stewart, with Vice President Steve Schweizer, Secretary Carla Keele, and Treasurer Kim Friesland. 80 FIRST ROW: S. Also, the Varsity Letterman’s Club worked along with the Booster Club to give the Athletic Banquet and obtain a speaker. Sponsors of the Letterman’s Club are Mr. Farrel Flatt and Mr. Loren Wallace. 81 “Old Nokomis” is the result of many hours of hard work, mixed with a certain amount of talent, blended with a number of snapshots, and turned over and over until the staff produces a book suitable to their tastes. This year the material was distributed to various editors, each one handling a particular phase of school activities. With the help of our sponsors, Mrs. Simons and Miss Clark, deadlines were met. Even with copy that was either too long or too short, film that turned out blank, or pages typed wrong, when an idea worked out it was worth it. Publishing a yearbook is a learning process for all, but it is also a common project in which the staff worked as a team. Through their work “Old Nokomis” was published for the fellow students of NHS. Assembling the memories Editor Barb Stauder and Asst. Barb Stauder, Janet Cassidy, Cheryl Gonet, Jane Kettlekamp, and Kathy Pudenz, won the district meet at Greenville. This enabled them to travel to Peoria for State competition. The G.A.A. also sponsored their 2nd annual Daddy-Daughter night which was a huge success. The dads and daughters enjoyed various games of skill which include golf putting and the ball bounce. Afterwards, awards are given out for the team with the highest number of points, and then refreshments are served. At the end of the year, the Mother-Daughter banquet is held to initiate the new members and to give out awards earned to deserving members. 4 Year Letter Girls — L to R: B. Betzold, C. Schworm, P. Yet in the 1972 season they found another enemy known as injuries. Injuries seemed to dominate the Redskins, but even with all the drawbacks they managed a 5-3-1 record, the fourth best season the school has seen since 1950. We got off to a running start by winning 12-7 over our major rival, Pana. We then went on to beat Southwestern and Virden. As our wins increased so did our injuries but we managed a 16-16 tie with St. Elmo. Our first loss came when we met Macon and they downed us with a score of 14-6. With the disappointment of a loss, we went to Mt. Olive and ran over them for a 20-8 victory. With homecoming spirit abounding, we had a close game with Carlinville but managed an 8-0 win. Onward we went to meet Staunton and Gillispie our last two games of the season, only to come home with our second and third defeats of the year. The season was over, the injuries were healing, and the Nokomis Redskins were remembering 1972 dreaming of 1973. Junior Varsity Record 0-4 COACHES: Jerry Lietschuh FIRST ROW: J. Evans, R. Petty, B. Then, filled with spirit, the Redskins went on Friday night to remain undefeated in the South Central Conference holding Carlinville to only 50 yards. In the 4th quarter, the Redskins went 60 yards for the only touchdown of the night. The Expressions of Times When You Know You’re the Best The Nokomis Redskins’ basketball team opened their 1972-73 season with hopes the team would pick up where it had left off the previous year, winning 8 of its last 9 games, to end the season with a 21-8 record. Coach Wallace felt the schedule would be stronger because the Conference was more balanced and that the Redskins would be Conference contenders. Wallace also saw defensive play as Nokomis' strong point. And defensive action played the important role in our 22-5 season. The Redskins started the season with wins over Ramsey, Pana, and Gillespie, but were handed their first defeat by Conference foe, Carlinville. But the Redskins came back winning all but three of their regular season games and captured Conference title with an 11-1 record. After losing to Bunker Hill in the Carlinville Holiday Tournament, 37-34, the Redskins then took consolation honors by defeating Carlinville and Southwestern. In the Litchfield Invitational, the Big Red won their opening game against Greenville, only to have a heartbreaking 51-48 loss to Hillsboro and a crushing 56-36 defeat to Litchfield. Seeded No. 1 in the Regional, the Big Red didn't let anyone down as they defeated Bunker Hill 52-50 and Litchfield 39-38 in two thrilling last second victories when Jan Janssen scored baskets in both games to give us the win. Then on to Vandalia to face the Venice Red Devils, rated No. 5 in the state, where the Redskins were handed a 48-40 loss. Ending the 1973 basketball season with this sectional game, the Nokomis Redskins fulfilled their three goals. With their 22-5 record, the Redskins not only surpassed their dream of winning 20 games, but at the same time found themselves winning Conference. When they achieved their ultimate goal of winning the Regional at Staunton, their dream season suddenly became a reality. 98 J. V. The Nokomis wrestling team had begun its 3rd year of interscholastic competition. Interest had grown greatly, both as a spectator sport and in student participation. In their second year of varsity competition, they scored a fine duel record of 14 wins and 1 loss. We had an outstanding show at the Vandalia Invitational Tournament. In the 155 lb. weight class Floyd Storm received 1 st, at 123 Tony Hard got 2nd, and 1 22 Ray Kamer and 138 Steve Braye both received 3rd. Floyd Storm and Ray Kamer then advanced on to the IHSA District at Vandalia where each took second place in their weight divisions. The Outstanding Wrestler in the 72-73 season was Floyd Storm, and Ray Kamer received the Runner-Up Outstanding Wrestler. Because of the team's performance in its second year. Coach Jerry Leitschuh was presented by the Decatur Herald Review the Area Wrestling Coach of the Year. The wrestling team of 72-73 will lose only one varsity graduating senior which will give them a lot of experience for next year. Out of the masses The night of June 1, 1973, was cool and springy and the night of graduation for the class of 73. The liberal minded members put aside the traditional ceremonial procedures and held their graduation exercises outside on the football field. After the invocation which was given by Reverend Matzke, the band belted out Man of La Mancha and a splendid rendition of Shaft. Had it not been for the traditional solemness of the occasion, they undoubtedly would have received another standing ovation much like the one they received for their spring concert. Susan Van Doren salutatorian and Barbara Stauder, Valedictorian, delivered their speeches to the graduates that were unique in that they waved the trite emotional appeal and got down to the nitty gritty. Next Mr. Ron Shawgo announced those members of the senior class who had maintained a 4.5 average during their four years of high school. This, too, was one of the renovations made in this years graduation procedure. Previously, only the top ten members of the class were announced. Diplomas were presented by Mr. Fred Fesser, President of the Board of Education. Benediction was given by Reverend Marvin Matzke and the Seniors marched off the field to the tune of Proud Heritage. Valedictorian — Barb Stauder 126 Paula Shallenberger applies the finishing touches for Steve Schweizer. There were 4 years and then there was the final hour. The last minutes, the last instructions. Here stands the future. . . ond then came the congratulations. steps an individual 127 1973 Honors Valedictorian — Barbara Stauder Music Award 4.5 HONORS SITTING: M. Ovca J. Cassidy L. Martin J. The 1973 Old Nokomis Staff hopes we captured for you some of the fleeting moments gone by. Whether it was an exciting game, a special dance, or just the pleasure of being with certain people. Our wish is that the images are mirrored within the pages of this book. Without each and every person, the picture is less than whole. For the images are of individuals, but the reflection is of one. 131 “Class of 73” Activity List LU ANN ALEXANDER FTA 3; Pep Club 1, 2; Chorus 1, 2, 3; Songsters 1, 2, 3; Musical 1; Valentines Court 2, 3; Christmas Court 2; Prom Court 3, 4; Junior Class Play 3; Pacesetters 2 CATHERINE JEAN ANDERSON FTA 3, 4, Historian 3; GAA 3, 4, Treasurer 4; Pep Club 1, 2; Chorus 1, 2, 3; Musical 1, 2, 3; Junior Class Play 3; Pow Wow 4; Yearbook 4; Pacesetters 2 BARBARA BEA BARNSTABLE FTA 3, 4, Parliamentarian 4; GAA 1, 2, 3, 4; Pep Club 1; Chorus 1,2, 3, 4; Band 4; Musical 1 ( 2, 3, 4; Junior Class Play 3; Pow Wow 3; Yearbook 2, 3, 4; Office Worker 4; Pacesetters 2, 3; GAA 4-Year Letter Girl BARBARA ANN BETZOLD FTA 4; GAA 1, 2, 3, 4; Pep Club 1; Chorus 1,2; Musical 1, 2, 3; Valentines Court 4; Prom Server 2; Yearbook 4; Junior Class President 3; Co-op Youth Leadership Camp 2; 1 st Year Typing Award 2; 2nd Year Typing Award 3; DAR 4; Junior Class Play 3; GAA 4-Year Letter Girl MARK BOLTE Pep Club 1,2; Football 1,4; Basketball 1,2 RODNEY BOWERS FFA 1,2, 3,4 KAY BRACKENHOFF Pep Club 1( 2 JERRY L.
