Mr. Ross is in his fourth year of service as superintendent of Nokomis High School and Unit District 22. The School Board works along with Mr. Ross in setting up rules and regulations. They work many tiring unpaid hours in settling school policy. While Mr. Ross has been superintendent, he laid the ground work and created the constructive, progressive atmosphere that has carried Nokomis High School to a higher status in our area 48 SUPERINTENDENT JOSEPH E. ROSS Mr. Wood Fills Shoes Of 'Big Chief'. it takes a big man to fill the shoes of principal ot Nokomis High School. In his first year as principal Mr. Wood has shown outstanding qualities of congeniality, willing cooperation, and interest. He is able to accomplish the complex tasks of coordinating the diversified units which make up the high school. As the educational head of a learning institution, the principal must supervise the instructional program and work with the School Board to provide for improvements in curriculum. With his continually reaffirmed interest in students, Mr. Wood measures up to the demands of the principal's job. PRINCIPAL CHARLES G. WOOD Mr. McCracken Guides Students For Future. Mr. McCracken, who is Guidance Counselor at Nokomis High School, helps the students as best as he can through the year to prepare them for the future. He helps the students in the choices of colleges and universities and schedules testing for their acceptance into these schools. He tries to spend time with the students to solve any personal problems they may have and you can always count on him to listen and try the best he can to help. We are very fortunate to have such a man as counselor. MR. VICTOR A. McCRACKEN 49 Unit Office 50 MRS. The student librarians, above, assist the head librarian Mrs. Bogle, in helping the students locate information concerning research and also books for their own enjoyment. Since the jobs of the principal's secretary are so time consuming and tedious, the office girls, center, help to ease the load of work of the principal, Mr. Wood. Schedule changes, college registrations, and the basic problems students encounter during the year are just a few things which the guidance office handles with the assistance of the four girls below. A few perform the necessary typing duties, while others assemble all the material. With all these students working together, they hope to produce a book which they will be proud of and which will be a favorite among their fellow students. Janssen. the first dream of the year; I kept it a secret and smiled to myself Redskins Dominate Homecoming Game With a 5-0-1 record to date, Nokomis moved another step closer to the South Central Conference championship with a 26-0 win over a good Mt. Olive football team. In 1957 the Redskin football team ended its year with a record of 7-2 and if you want to go back a few more years the team was 8-1 in 1950, and 9-0 in 1949. This was when Nokomis was in the MSM Conference. Coach Farrell Flatt had nothing but praise for his defensive squad as they held Mt. Olive to a mere 3 plus yards rushing. Quarterback Mike Cesaretti showed excellent poise in avoiding tacklers and passing 35 yards to Alexander for Nokomis' first TD in the second quarter. Another Cesaretti to Alexander pass set up Nokomis' second TD as Cesaretti took the ball into the end zone on a Vi yard quarterback sneak. The extra two points were added as Alexander made a beautiful, diving, one-handed catch of o Cesaretti pass. Al Harrison, leading ground gainer for the game with 63 yards, ran a reverse 25 yards to the one yard line. Then Harrison punched the ball over for a 20-0 half-time lead. In the third quarter Cesaretti again went to the air with a 15 yard pass to Alexander and the TD. This touchdown was scored after an 85 yard drive. The big play in the 85 yard drive was a draw play on which Al Harrison picked up 73 yards. This was the end of the scoring for the remainder of the game. Probably the best executed play of the night and it scored a TD was called back by the referees because of illegai procedure by Nokomis with 11 minutes and 20 seconds gone in the second quarter. Nokomis used a fake draw screen pass which sent fullback Dirks straight up the middle but empty handed. Mt. Olive was completely fooled as they gang-tackled Dirks. Meantime, back field, Cesaretti who had faked the hand off beautifully, flipped a little flat pass to John Flowers. Ed Heck, Jay Heck and Steve Kimbro were there for John's interference if he had needed any. This is a play everyone would like to see on film and remember. Juniors Reign Over Dance On Saturday, Oct. 23, the Redskins, along with their very happy fans, brought to an end the traditional football homecoming. A dance, sponsored by the Student Council, was given in the No-komis High School cafeteria, with the Springfield Mountain from St. Louis providing the music. Approximately 200 people attended the dance. The cafeteria was decorated with the school's colors of red and black and a set of red goal posts were placed at one end. A giant football and the words The Home of The Redskins accented the stage used for the coronation. As the master of ceremonies, Byron Schneider, introduced the candidates, the candidates would be spotlighted while descending the steps and proceeding between the goal posts to the stage where they would await the final announcement of the 1971-72 Homecoming Queen and King. Queen and King of this year’s homecoming were Joan Scheller and Al Harrison. Queen Joan and King Al were selected by popular I vote by the junior class to run against representatives from the other classes. On Friday all eight candidates were voted upon by the entire student body. Candidates were: freshmen, Marie Bolte and Mark Schweizer; sophomores, Cheryl Gonet and Kevin O'Malley; juniors, Joan Scheller and Al Harrison; and seniors, Debbie O'Malley and Bruce Ket-telkamp. Music Department Creates “Oklahoma Under the direction of the two music department teachers Mr. Norman Rhoades and Mrs. Maxine Tosetti, OKLAHOMA was selected as this year's musical. Approximately two months of planning, casting, and rehearsing were put into its production. Many long hours of night rehearsals brought about one of the best musicals of the three which have been performed in Nokomis. The curtains opened for Oklahoma on March 24, 1972 for the first time. The musical ran for two night performances bringing in a total audience of approximately 800 persons. The original production of Oklahoma opened on Broadway in March, 1943 and it established a run of five years with some twenty-two hundred performances. It was based on a play Green Grow the Lilacs written by Lynn Riggs. It was about the feud between the ranchers who had staked out the territory for cattle-grazing and the farmers who wanted the land for their crops. Oklahoma now goes down in the history of Nokomis High School as another success story of the 1971-72 school year. Will Parker, Cord Elam, and Fred. Though our first game with Pana was a disappointing tie, the football Redskins bounced back to win 7 out of their 8 games the rest of the season, including a come-from-behind 22-20 win over the conference foe, Staunton. The team's only loss came in a 33-16 conference decision game with Carlin-ville. The Redskins finished with an overall record of 7-1-1, the best record compiled by any No-komis team since 1949. The Redskins clinched a share of the South Central Conference title along with Staunton and Carlinville with each team having identical conference records of 5-1. Cries of “We’re No. 1“ rang through the halls as school spirit rose with the increasing excitement of the sectional tournament. The basketball Redskins aimed high, and with the win over Vandalia in the first sectional game, we dared to hope our dream would come true. But the state tournament bubble broke when we were defeated by Lovejoy in overtime by a score of 70-67. Under the new head basketball coach, Loren Wallace, the season began with the team defeating Glenwood, but soon lost the next game to Pana 70-83. The team improved with each game they played from then on. The Redskins defeated Raymond Lin-colnwood, who took third place honors in the state tournament, 69-62, to take third place in the Carlin-ville Holiday Tournament. After losing the first game of the Litchfield Tournament to Triad, 77-65, the team captured the consolation trophy by overcoming Jerseyville and Bethalto. One highlight of the season was the upset of Southwestern, till then undefeated, by the score of 58-50. The Redskins ended their winning season with 21 wins and 8 losses. The team had a truly great season of which the team, coaches, and fans are proud. Neil Alexander was named to the South Central Conference first team which he has achieved for the past two years. He was named to the second team in-the 1969-70 season. A junior, Steve Kimbro was placed on the second team this year. Jim Taulbee was awarded a trophy for the best free-throw percentage and the trophy for the most rebounds was given to Neil Alexander. 1971-72 BASKETBALL SEASON NHS OPP NHS OPP Glenwood .66 56 Lincolnwood . .67 70 Pana .70 83 Rochester . .50 54 Macon .63 50 'Southwestern .... . .55 74 'Gillespie .76 82 'Mt. Many different sports are offered throughout the year such as softball and archery in spring and fall and basketball, bowling, and volleyball during the winter months. This year's G.A.A. was sponsored by Miss Dolores Gowen and led by President Pat Roberts. Besides weekly sports, the G.A.A. sponsored and participated in other activities. Daddy-Daughter Night and Mother-Daughter Banquet are enjoyed by the girls and their parents. They also participated in bowling and basket shooting contests, Playdays, and a badminton and volleyball tournament with Pana. Candy was -sold and school bake sales were held. This money was used to sponsor our G.A.A. Playday and to buy tickets to a baseball game in St. Louis at the end of the school year. Our wrestling program was bolstered by the purchase of a new regulation wrestling mat. The mat is resilite and absorbs shock. At two home meets the Redskins took a raw egg and threw it up about 10-12 feet. When the egg landed on the mat, it did not break, thus proving the absorbancy of the mat. The team this year consisted of mostly freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. The only senior was Joe Marley. So, the 1972-73 team will still be here come next season. Many school records were made this year. They will be continuous records. They were: Fastest pin, Marley — 22 seconds; Most pins. Girls Take 1st At Hillsboro For the first time in the history of Nokomis High School a girls’ individual athletic group was formed. With an idea from two senior girls — Linda (Liberator) Tester and Denise Hagemeier — they managed to persuade principal, Mr. Wood, to allow the girls to have a track team. Approximately 30 girls went out for track this year. Hillsboro High School wished to have a track meet with Nokomis and Gillespie. The Nokomis team worked many strenuous hours jumping hurdles, throwing the discus and running laps around the track field. But their work paid off when they came home from Hillsboro with the First Place Trophy, beating Hillsboro by 19 points and Gillespie by 23 points. As the meet opened, since Nokomis had never been in a meet before, there were many shaky arms and legs. The soft-ball throw was first on the list and Jayne Bertoglio and Pam Mussatto threw it some 162.10 feet and 162 feet. Next Cheryl Gonet, Nokomis, walked up to the line and very calmly threw the softball 193.6 feet which gave Nokomis the first win of the evening and also boosted the spirits of many Nokomis girls. Now we feel the life in us, passing in waves before our senses . . . the fullness of our lives. The pages turn revealing the past in shadowed images . . . not to be past at all . . . but a living part . . . of now! If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them.
