’58 OLD NO KOMIS JANET SAATKAMP Assistant Editor Jr! Strike i Jp Thi m w There are times we thought we wouldn’t. But we finally got it done. It took a lot of effort. But we had a lot of fun. The Editors Foreword The theme chosen for this 1958 edition of the Old Nokomis is music. Our music staffs, notes, and symbols will lead you through the pages of this yearbook. We have tried to capture between the covers of this book a year at N. H. S. We hope that we have brought back many fond and pleasant memories to each of you. THE STAFF In Memoriam We, the members of the Annual Staff, wish to tender this page in our yearbook in memory of our beloved friend and classmate, Sue Vandever. Her pleasing personality, her friendly smile, her willingness to work, and her wonderful cooperation in everything she undertook was a fine example to each and every one of the student body. Dedication We the members of the 1958 annual staff wish to dedicate this edition of the Old Nokomis to out teacher and guidance supervisor. Miss Louise Hogue. We wish to express our appreciation for the help she has given us through the years, and especially for her able guidance to higher education. Board of Education Our 1957-58 school board is composed of seven of our local citizens. We deeply appreciate the way in which the members have devoted their time and efforts so that the students of the unit may receive the best in education. SEATED: Mr. John Tester, Mr. E. E. The stunts presented were so equal in originality and comedy that the decision of the judges was a three way tie. Each class received a pennant for their stunt. Gloria Kamer's accordion solo, Marilyn Sievers' vocal solo, the Senior Sextette, and the Sophomore band ensemble made up the musical entertainment for the afternoon. The Senior Will and Prophecy was read and then the Seniors adjourned to the campus to bury their box of treasures. The day came to a close with the Class Day Dance sponsored by the Annual Staff and the Senior Class. The 1957 Redskins dominated by Juniors and Sophomores opened the season losing to a good Pana team by the score of 13-0. In our first home game against Southwestern, Hinton ran wild the first half. With the score 34-12 the reserves played much of the second half. Our second conference game being at Benld we lost a hard fought game by the score of 7-6. Our next game being at home with Gillespie turned out to be a thriller. Nokomis leading 12-7 with a minute remaining, kicked off to Gillespie, Matervy of Gillespie returned the kick-off to Nokomis' 8 yd. line. The Redskins dug in and held them for four downs - ending the game. On the last play a member of the Nokomis Redskins jumped off-side and although time had run out, Gillespie was permitted to run the last down over and scored. The outcome 13-12 in favor of Gillespie. The following week Nokomis traveled to Northwestern to play an afternoon game. The Redskins lost 19-0. The results of the game between Mt. Olive and Nokomis was 34-0 in favor of Mt. Olive. Our last home game of the year turned out to be the thriller of the year. Staunton came to Nokomis looking for an easy win but as we all know, ball games are won on the field and by hard play and sacrifice. The results - Nokomis 6, Staunton 6. They lost the first game of the Sectional at Collinsville to Highland in the fifth inning, playing the fifth inning in a wind and rain storm. Dennis Buckwheat O'Malley piloted the Redskins through the District and'two Regional games. He also was the losing pitcher to Highland. George Hinton led the team in hitting with 18 hits and a batting average of .353. Bill DeWerff was the big man driving in 11 runs. Dennis O'Malley, Hubie Gonet, and Charles Huber carried the team through the season on the mound. The Redskins had a young team this year. The only Seniors being Dennis O'Malley and Jerry Cear-lock.
