Hilarious stunts portraying the seniors kept the audience roaring. The Class Day pennant, given each year to the class presenting the best skit, was awarded to the Sophomores. The Junior Octette, the Senior Sextette, and Connie Jostes' solo made up the day’s musical entertainment. The seniors read their will and prophecy and then retired to the school campus where they buried their box of prized memories. The day ended with the Class Day Dance sponsored by the seniors. acccilcuviectte Baccalaureate services for the Senior Class were held on Sunday evening, May 26, in the South School Gymnasium, The service was conducted by the Ministerial Alliance of Nokomis. The seniors benefited from the inspiring message, delivered by the Reverend John S. Rhine, entitled, Where Do You Think You Are Going? Joy Kettelkamp sang a vocal solo, and three juniors played an instrumental trio. @o K ne tce He tt On May 29, Commencement exercises for the senior class were held in the South School gym. This marked the biggest moment, as well as the last milestone, in the seniors' high school careers. The graduation address, entitled You and Yourself, ” was given by Professor Gilbert Kettelkamp of the University of Illinois. The program included several musical selections by the Unit Band, a song by the senior girls, a flute-oboe duet, and talks by the valedictorian and the salutatorian. After the presentation of the class by Mr. Bertolino, the seniors were presented their diplomas by the president of the board. Linda Pretner, Nancy Tossi, Maxine Ruffing, Bernadine Tosetti. The student body truly deserved to be proud this past season of their five energetic cheerleaders. These girls did a wonderful job leading the fans in enthusiastic yells and cheers and in showing the players that we were really backing them. Good work, girls! Their hard play, hard tacking, and never-say-die team spirit made every game a pleasure to watch. They won four out of eight games. They executed the upset of the year with a 25-0 victory over Ex-Champ Mt. Olive and barely lost to Champ Carlinville 19-18. All-Conference laurels went to Micklautz, Blix, and Ruffing. Micklautz was named on the second little All-State Team as a tackle and Ruffing concluded a fine high school career that saw him average 11.4 yards a carry as he gained 2595 yards in 227 attempts. Jerry Cearlock was the team’s leading tackier. Coach Bob Calvin has seen the Redskins win eleven of their last seventeen games. As foreseen by many at the beginning of the 1956-57 Basketball season, our team lacked the experience that wins ball games and, as a result of this, suffered a very poor over-all season. Even with losses greatly outnumbering the wins, the team did show some outstanding caliber of play in several games, including the Paris Holiday Tournament, where they beat a tough Bethalto five and held Paris to a first half tie. These two games alone showed the potentials of our underclassmen. The 1957 track team, under the able coaching of Bob Calvin, was probably one of the finest that Nokomis has ever produced. Undefeated in dual meet competition for the second straight year and placing high in all major meets that they participated in, the Redskins set new school records as they hard-worked their way through tough competition. The highlights of the season were the battle with Carlinville for the Conference Championship and the State District Meet in which four Redskins qualified for the State finals. Charles Ruffing won the 100 yard dash; the 880 yard relay team placed second to qualify. The relay team, composed of Ruffing, Skinner, Gibson, and May, ran the half-mile in 1:36.0 for a new school record. Ruffing ran the 100 yard relay in the brilliant time of :10 flat to break the conference and school records. John Skinner continued his record-setting pace by lowering the high hurdle mark to :15. 6 and the low hurdles to :21. 0. He high jumped a near record 5’H . Bob May was named team captain. His determination typified the 1957 Redskins. Varsity letters were awarded to: Captain May, Skinner, Ruffing, Gibson, Gary Arkebauer, Dave Rademacher, Bob Spindel, Bernard Whalen, Bill Fox, Jerry Zionic, Joe Boarman, Don Eddington, Steve Jaros, Jim Prevedel, Virgil Wright, and Wesley Hunt. Lack of experience played the major role in the season, with several freshmen playing at Key positions. These boys will in time develop but were not capable of getting that hit or executing the play at the right time. Joe Wright carried the pitching chores and pitched several fine games, but lacked support. Dave Rademacher showed good form in relief pitching and in the several times that he started. Richard Costa was perhaps the most experienced man on the team and handled the catching expertly. Bob Wright at third base, along with Rademacher at first, provided the only other experience on the infield. Other boys who helped out were Leo Epley at shortstop; Jerry Zionic and Bob Kates in left field; Hubert Gonet at third; Bill DeWerff in right field, and George Hinton in center field. These, excepting DeWerff and Hinton, were freshmen and will undoubtedly provide a strong nucleus for a better Redskin team in future seasons. 1957 RECORD BATTING AVERAGES AB R H Average Nokomis 3 Springfield Nokomis 5 Mt.
