22 CIF Basketball C.l.F. I98l After a once in a liletitne perfect 26-O season. the Nogales Nogales entered the C.l.F. play-offs as the number two seeded team in the tournament of 36. The season already was a testimonial of excellence with three tournament championships and a second consecutive Valle Vista League championship to our credit. The first roung game found the Nobles turning up for a much tougher road ahead by thrashing Arroyo High 86-52 before a sold out frenzied home crowd. The Nobles sixth man. the fans, had followed and supported the team in their own championship fashion. Everybody got into the act against Arroyo. Pete Williams scored 26 points had I2 rebounds and 6 assists. While Cecil Fielder had 2l points and IO assists. Randy Downs. I2 points. 4 blocked shots and Jeff Randel El. ll points. ll rebounds. It was then to the second round and San Clemente. The game was played at Dana Hills Highs School and the Nobles took one more step up the ladder. Final score 65-64. with all the thrills of past season play. this was a white knuckler. Paul Togneri hit a I and I free throw situation and Pete Williams stole the key pass to win this one. In the Playoffs each game is the final, for if you lose you put the ball away until next year. The team was very determined to get to the Sports Arena and this goal was to be realized if they could defeat Barstow in the quarterfinals. This game was played at Los Altos High and the drama of the preceeding thrills carried over into this game. The twenty-ninth victory of the season was nailed down 70-64. Everyone starred in the victory. The Sports Arena. the dream of dreams realized for a high school basketball team. The court John Wooden coached on against U.S.C.. the many great players over the years that had played there Walton. Withes. Marques Johnson. This was our World Series. our Academy Awards night. with all the fervor of an opening night of some classic play. The game. Semi-finals verse Blair High School was a spectacular delight. Nogales appeared far superior three out of four quarters but the second quarter the Vikings put on a scoring blitz and that was the story. Down by I9 points with I2 minutes to play. Nobles put on a display of great comeback basketball. One that defies a writer's script for a usual fictional thriller which always finds the Hero in the Victor's Circle. But there were to be no bells of victory this night. The final 9 seconds were a stop action frame by frame climax of shattering reality. Down by 68-66 Cecil Fielder had a shot hit the back of the rim to hear the buzzer silence and dissolve the dream before all eyes. The Eulogy is one not of losing but the Victory of a School. The establishment of an identity. The i980-BI Noble Basketball Team was a symbol of courage. character, and class. Wherever the Nobles went excitement and first class basketball followed. An array of high flying slam dunks. a defense which shut the hoop of opponents off at 48.5 per game, a fast break which was a poem of rhythm with ballet choreography in the scoring phase. So a salute to a 29 and I team that will long be remembered as one of the all-time if not all- time San Gabriel Valley Teams. ff . Q ., ' f w12s:bf7' ,- J 1 4 t , y A 'Km ' it f Q.
