wx Q, lf N . ...L s , x 4' 5 ' 'ffl Xq.-Rx graft.. CJ FOREIG XC ANC-JE My home country, West-Germany. is about the size of Oregon. The climate is quite a bit cooler than in Southern California. The temperatures range in the summer from about 68.0 to 93.0 de- grees F and in the winter CDecember-Februaryj from about 44.0l5.CD degrees F. Especially in the state I live in, Bavaria. it snows a lot, since it is very close to the Alphs. The age when you become fully adult is l8, which is at the same time the drivers age. But the age is not the only problem, it is more, the 5750.-U.5. that you have to pay for the license. Also the costs of living and gasoline are almost tiwce as high as here. As a result the average families only have two children and less cars on the road. People use less checking-accounts and hardly any credit cards - they rather pay cash. Instead of shopping malls you would see numerous department stores, specialized stores and boutiques . You wouldn't find any surfing of any king because the only beaches we have are in the very North and are too cold. I should mention that our school system is quite different from here. We start kindergarten when we are 3 years old. pre-school at the age of 5 and elementary school at the age of 6. After the four years of elementary school you choose be- tween the following of 3 types of school: l. HauptschuIe C5 yrs.-basicsj 2. Realschule C6 yrsfbusinessftech- nical skillsj 3. Gymnasium K9 yrs.-liberal artsy After that you can either continue your schooling or look for a iob. Concluding my essay I named a few things that are different from my home land and California, Germany is also known for Hot Potato Pancakes, Potato sald. Beer Clovoenbrau, Beck's, Heineckenj, the Octoberlest , and cars such as Volkswagen. Audi, Merceds, Porsche and BMW. Starring TEFANIE IELERT 26 Foreign Exchange 4 ,., 5

Behind The Scenes was an appropri- ate theme chosen for this years charter. The theme was a challenge that the staff undertook and ment successfully. The production and responsibilities of meet- ing deadlines was the hardest. The re- sult of their hard work produced a dif- ferent yearbook that has ever hit the campus of Nogales. X, nd also starring Pl PENNAN N lam Pia, the other exchange student in Nogales High School this year. The first semester has been great and I am really looking forward to the second semester. I come from Finland which is one of the Nordic coun- tries in northern Europe. lt is located by Norway and Swedent The population of my country is very low but still Finland is the seventh biggest country in Europe. Finland is known for its beautiful landscape. We have over 60.0CXJ great lakes and lots of green forests. The northern part of Finland is called the Lapland. It lies almost entirely above the Artic Circle and it is really the skiiers wonderland. The people, that live in Lapland are called the Lapps. They raise reindeers for a living, My home country is also known for the modern de- sign and architecture. lt is also known for its fair-haired and blue-eyed people. The Finns are very stubborn and strong-minded, though they also like to have a lot of fun. I live in Helsinki, which is the capital of Finland. lt is in the very south of Finland by the Baltic Sea. The winters in Helsinki are dark and cold but the summers are warm and sunny. Helsinki is a city of many parks and old buildings, Young people spend their time in Helsinki by going to the discos and movies. American culture is very spread out in Finland. American hamburger places and movies are very typical part of Finnish life. People in Finland speak Finnish or Swedish. Which are the two native tongues. I come from a family of four people. My father is a lieutenant-colonel in the Finnish Army and my mother has a part-time iob, My sister Ria is already out of school and she is working. I have enjoyed my stay here in California very much. I am happy about all the nice people I have met here at Nogales and I hope to contin- ue our friendships after I have returned to Finland.
