CLA 5115 The area now Montague County was known to French and Spanish trappers as early as 1719 be- cause of an important village of Taovayas Indians, a branch of the Wichitas, at a bend in Red River. In October, 1759, a Spanish punitive expedition to the fortified rancheria was defeated by allied Indians flying a French flag. After 1812, the Indian settlements diminished in size and importance. When the early American settlers in north Texas found the ruins of the old fortifications, they assumed that these had been left by the Spanish, and therefore the locality of the old Indian village came to be known as Spanish Fort.
