DECK The overall maintenance and proper func- tioning of shipboard activities is accomplished by the deck department. Their hectic and varied jobs include the following: Making sure that the twenty- four boats utilized during one alfa exercises are in commission at all times and to provide person- nel to operate themg drop and raise the anchorg handle replenishments at seag operate booms and winchesg load and unload hatchesg maintain troop berthing compartmentsg keep the entire ship's sides and decks clean and paintedg provide equal distribution of trained personnel to man gun mounts at given general quarters stations. All these plus many more tasks are per- formed every day while at sea or in port. Flexi- bility and the will to do any job is what makes the deck department so very important. - -f -fm t i a l - L .
