After morning quarters an azimuth of the sun is determined to verify the accuracy of the gyro compass. Sun lines are shot about 1000 and 11005 these along with LAN flocal apparent noonj determine the ship's 1200 position. A few sun lines are taken during the afternoon to check on the ship's progress. At sundown an ampli- tude of the sun is taken in order to again check the accuracy of the gyro compass. If it is a new port of call he will have been up until midnight and will be on the bridge perhaps two more hours before sea detail is set. Two of the constant headaches of the department are keeping all of the shipis forty clocks accurate and keeping the deck logs up to date. The man who spends his time in after steering during general quarters, one-alfa and unreps sometimes wishes there was a periscope installed so he could at least see where he has been.
