Y-Y.: 1.3.--., NAVIGATICN While at sea the chief rises at 0430 and the navigator at 0500 to shoot morning starsg this is determined with the aid of the sextant. After morning quarters an azimuth of the sun is determined to verify the accuracy of the gyro compass. Sun lines are shot about 1000 and 11005 these along with LAN flocal apparent noonj determine the ship's 1200 position. A few sun lines are taken during the afternoon to check on the ship's progress. At sundown an ampli- tude of the sun is taken in order to again check the accuracy of the gyro compass. If it is a new port of call he will have been up until midnight and will be on the bridge perhaps two more hours before sea detail is set. Two of the constant headaches of the department are keeping all of the shipis forty clocks accurate and keeping the deck logs up to date. The man who spends his time in after steering during general quarters, one-alfa and unreps sometimes wishes there was a periscope installed so he could at least see where he has been. Hawaii was the isle of paradise-gay, informal and friendly. All enjoyed brilliant orchid and hibiscus blooms, Waikiki Beach, Diamondhead, the Royal Ha- waiian Hotel, the Blowhole and most of all the hula girls. Punch Bowl was a more heart- ening sight. The men who gave their lives for our country on December 7, 1941, are en- tombed here. A reminder of that memorable date is the mainmast of the battleship USS ARIZONA, the only visible remains of the vessel.
