Some men say they have done the best that they can do. But few men say their best was not enough. Or strive towards perfection on a road built of faults. Many a man has thrown back the challenge of life, And trod through his sorrows and fears with common regret and endurance. But even with pitfalls and cages, the willing must go on. And help all the others, who, when the going is rough may falter. One such as this, honor deserves, in giving good faith anon. For at last it does seem that all good things must pass. And now our thoughts remember his work and desire, So inspired by a man such as he, makes it hard to forget and easy to miss. He letter- ed three years in track, proving to be a valuable asset to the team, while achiev- ing a position on the All-County and All-State baseball teams. He plans to further his athletic career with a football scholarship at West Vir- ginia University. 119 s E N I 0 R S The Senior Class of 1972 has chosen Peggy Crewdson and Jack Eastwood as Mr. and Miss Senior. Peggy was also chosen Miss Wildcat, Secretary- Treasurer of the Senior Class, Most Popular, and Best Looking. She has contributed many hours of her time in building floats, decorating for the Prom and other dances, and many other activities. Jack was also chosen Best Looking, Most Pop- ular, and Best Athlete. He was chosen by the Morgantown Touchdown Club as player of the year in football. He rounds out his many activities by playing baseball and participating on the track team. HISTORY OF THE SENIOR CLASS OF 1972 As we the Senior Class of 1972, the 50th graduating class, take a look at the past days spent at Nitro High School, we see what will soon be only cherished memories in our life. Those days filled with classes and assemblies, football, basketball, and baseball games, wrestling matches, dances and proms, and just being ourselves. At the beginning of our sophomore year we elected as our President, Jerry Bailey; Vice President, Chuck Baer; and Secretary-Treasurer, Judy Boggess. That year was highlighted with building our first homecoming float entitled, “Cats Prowl Eagles.” Annie Shamblin was the sophomore attendant to Miss Wildcat. We started off our eventful junior year by electing Steve Thornton, Class President; Jerry Bailey, Vice President; and Pam Kidd, Secretary-Treasurer. Under their leadership we created a winning float, “Lap ’Em Up Cats”, for the homecoming festivities. The junior attendant to Miss Wildcat was Anita King. Then we ordered our class rings and began to plan the Junior-Senior Prom with the theme “The Age of Aquarius”. Student Council elections were held and for the first time at Nitro High a new Student Council Party was formed under the leadership of Danny McGinn, Party Chairman; Jay Gabany, Presidential candidate; and Jeff Magoun, Vice Presidential candidate. Although they were defeated by Mike Curry, President; Jerry Bailey, Vice President; and Susie Graves, Secretary-Treasurer; the Farce Party provided tough competition and made the elections more interesting. A carnival was held that year for the first time since about 1962 and Connie Walls was chosen Carnival Queen. In the Mountaineer Day Olympics, our class was victorious over the class of 71. At the beginning of the school year 1971 when we chose our class colors, red, white, and blue, our class flower, the red rose, our class song “We’ve Only Just Begun”, and our motto, “The past cannot be changed, but the power of the future is in our hands”, it became a reality to us that graduation was drawing near. At the majorette festival, the Nitro High Band was the star of the show, placing in several events. Judy Boggess highlighted the festival when she was chosen Miss Kanawha Valley Majorette. At the 1971 homecoming, Peggy Crewdson was crowned Miss Wildcat and our class maintained its fantastic floatmaking ability by winning the float competition with the theme “Forget It George!” The senior attendants to Miss Wildcat were Terri Agee, Susie Graves, and Patty Hatfield. At Santa’s Workshop, Susie Graves was chosen Snow Queen. Margaret Brannon, Judy Boggess, Belinda Brown, Ellen Mann, and JoAnn Sharp were the attendants. Our Class officers, President, Lenny Haynes; Vice President, Curt Arvidson; and Secretary-Treasurer, Peggy Crewdson, led us through a very rewarding year. During this year, Mike Curry was chosen Best Citizen and State Student Council President, which was a very great honor for him and for Nitro High School. As we now leave Nitro High School, “We’ve Only Just Begun” to start fulfilling our goals and dreams. “So many roads to choose, we’ll start our walking and learn to run” as we leave the halls of Nitro and start our careers in the world, with “So much of life ahead.” 124 John Abshire Terri Agee Laura Allen Mike Amory Stan Andruzis Curt Arvidson “To be what we are, and to become what we are capable of becoming, is the only end of life. Now that you have graduated you must answer the inevitable question-“now what?” For all of you it means the continuation of studies in one way or another, because learning must and will continue throughout your lives. In the years to come you may have no more report cards or examinations, but everything you do will be judged realistically. Your preparation for every goal will be carefully watched, thoughtfully evaluated. Your courses have given you the tools for thought and judgement. They will serve you well, whatever the future has in store for you.
