Volume XXXI Nitro High School Nitro, West Virginia A Publication of the Senior Class of 1969 THE IMPOSSIBLE DREAM To dream the impossible dream, To fight the unbeatable foe, To bear the unbearable sorrow, To run where the brave dare not go. To right the unrightable wrong, To love, pure and chaste, from afar, To try, when your arms are too weary, To reach the unreachable star. And the world will be better for this; That one man, scorned and covered with scars, Still strove with his last ounce of courage, To reach—the unreachable stars. Our high school career began in August, 1966, when we, as sophomores, elected Rick Townsend, President, Wayne Stonestreet, Vice-President, and Patty Moats, Secretary-Treasurer, as class officers. Our sophomore year was just the beginning of our lasting memories and friendships of Nitro High. We moved on to our junior year facing the responsibility of planning the Junior-Senior Prom. We met this challenge under the leadership of Patty Sharps by honoring the Seniors with a Prom centered around the theme of The Old South.” While this was uppermost in our minds, the excitement of ordering and receiving class rings was an ever-present anticipation. Leading us through this active year were our officers. Gordon McClanahan, President, Debbie Higginbotham, Vice-President, and Brenda Hughes, Secretary-Treasurer. Serving as a background for our Senior year of 1969 were our class song, “The Impossible Dream”, and our motto, “The world will stop and let any man pass, if he knows where he is going.” Dark blue and light blue were selected as the color scheme throughout the year, even in the choice of the blue daisy as our class flower. Homecoming. 1969, was highlighted by the victory of the Seniors in both float and hall competition, and the crowning of Patty Moats as Miss Wildcat with attendants, Kathy Stricklen and Barbara Cassell. The highlight of the holiday season was the annual Winter Formal. The theme for the dance was “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.” Miss Carmen Townsend was chosen to reign as Snow Queen of the year 1968-1969. The Student Council sponsored this formal under the leadership of John Tidquist, President, Jeff Taylor, Vice-President, Debbie Higginbotliam. Secretary-Treasurer. Our plans for graduation were made with the guidance of our class officers, Roger McClanahan, President, Bob Frontz, Vice-President, and Patty Moats, Secretary-Treasurer. We look upon the graduation ot this Senior Class of 1969, as a realization of our childhood ambitions and as a step in reaching our “Impossible Dream.” 41 Deborah Ann Adkins Mildred A. Now that you have graduated you must answer the inevitable question- “now what?” For all of you it means the continuation of studies in one way or another, because learning must and will continue throughout your lives. In the years to come you may have no more report cards or examina- tions, but everything you do will be judged realistically. Your preparation for every goal will be carefully watched, thoughtfully evaluated. Your courses have given you the tools for thought and judgment. They will serve you well, whatever the future has in store for you. Here at American Viscose we owe much of our progress to the adoption of new ideas, new improved methods and fresh approaches brought to us by young people like yourselves who never learned to stop learning. fmc COMOMI'OI AMERICAN VISCOSE DIVISION 199 TO THE BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL MEN AND WOMEN OF KANAWHA VALLEY Our sincere thanks for the generous support which you have given our yearbook for the year 1969.
