HOMECOMING The Senior Class Hall We Believe On November 6, 1965, amid the floats, music, sunshine and gaiety, the anticipation showed on the faces and in the nervous smiles of the three candidates vying for the title of Miss Wildcat 1966 . The floats have lined up at the far end, thus setting the field for the battle to take place. The mighty Wildcats were set to send the Huskies back to the doghouse. The half-time procession was led by Miss Huskie, escorted by Joel Graves. Miss Huskie was followed by Nitro royalty. The anti-climax came during assembly, Friday, November 5, when the Junior Class was presented with the First Place trophy for the Hall Decorations. The presentation brought much joy for the Juniors as it represented an award for hours of hard work and planning. The Juniors' happiness was not short lived. After the hours of planning and hard work put into their hall, Eve of Destruction-Dawn of Correction , it came as quite a surprise to every- one when the Junior Class float won first place in the class division. Not only have they pre- sented their annual concerts, but they also present and perform their musical programs for pep assemblies, special assemblies and all of the football games. The band is the one group that represents the school through more of the county than any other school sponsored group. The band has represented Nitro High School many times at the annual Kanawha County Majorette Festival. This is one of the few Nitro High School groups that have had the opportunity to represent the school by travelling out of West Virginia. They represented Nitro High in the Lions International in Chicago several years ago. 36 SENIOR BAND MEMBERS BAND ASSISTANTS BAND SUPERLATIVES David Hoffman, Student Director Ricky Wallace and Joe Eddie Mattox; Drum Major and Assistant Drum Major respectively were chosen by Mr. Conrad Poff, Band Director, on the basis of their ability. These four persons are directly responsible for the success and superiority of the Nitro High School Band. HEAD DRUM MAJOR Rick Wallace, who has led the band through many marching routines and has shown his own ability by performing his intricate twirling routines, is Nitro High's Drum Major. This year Rick placed second in drum major twirling at the Majorette Festival. This is Rick's third year to participate as Nitro’s drum major and his second year to win a trophy in drum major twirling. 38 CHOIR The Nitro High School Concert Choir, under the direction of Mrs. Delores McGucken, consists of the best voices of the Senior and Junior Choirs. The Con- cert Choir has presented their choral programs at school functions and community functions. The Concert Choir has performed in pep as- semblies, special assemblies, for churches, and P.T.A. The highlighted performance of the Concert Choir is their Annual Choir Concert. From the Concert Choir, Mrs. McGucken chooses those people to represent Nitro High in All-County Choir and All-State Choir. This year Sarah Schowen, Jane Carpenter, Allen Schaeffer and Robert Dunn were chosen for All-State Choir. ALL-STATE CONCERT CHOIR 39 ALL-COUNTY THE CHORALEERS The Choraleers, under the direction of Mrs. Delores Mc- Gucken, Choir Director, is a spe- cial group which was organized to perform for community func- tions. The group is small enough to be invited to private homes for various meetings or to civic functions for larger audiences. 40 SENIOR CHOIR JUNIOR CHOIR MISS NITRO HIGH Miss Patti Hutsenpiller, a vivacious Senior, was chosen as Miss Nitro High to represent Nitro in the WKAZ parade on Oct- ober 30. Patti was chosen on the basis of her beauty, personality and school achieve- ments and activities. She was awarded First Runner Up by the WKAZ judges. WKAZ provided Patti with flowers and a convertible. She was escorted by Terry Allen. WKAZ planned a fun-filled evening too. After the parade, the contestants and their escorts were the guests of honor at a dance sponsored by WKAZ. The record is deceiving, however, for Nitro lost several hard-fought games which could have been wins, had the breaks gone the other way. Although leading 13-7 at the half, Nitro lost its opening game against Barboursville, 25 to 13. The following weekend the Wildcats were held scoreless by a good St. Albans team, losing by a 49-0 margin. On September 24 the fired up Nitro gridders out-fought the South Charleston Black Eagles but lost, 19-13. Nitro led in first downs, 13-5, and the total yardage, 234-104, but was stymied in the scoring column. The game ended with Nitro on the Eagle's nine yard line. Nitro was then defeated by Dupont, 35-0, and Dunbar, 31-6, before recording its first victory of the season. The win occurred at Sissonville where the Wildcats rolled over the Indians, 27-0. Nitro continued to win, ringing up successive wins over Charleston Catholic and George Washington. The scores of these games were 8-7 and 20-7 respectively. In the final two games of the season Nitro was defeated by Herbert Hoover, 19-12, and Poca, 28-13. Leading the Wildcats during the campaign were backs Aaron Phillips, Ralph Lucas, Steve Whittington and Jim Turley and lineman Greg Harris. Assisting coach Cowley were Roy Blizzard, Carl Bradford and Jon Loftis. The Wildcats opened and closed the season with three wins but found the going rougher during mid-season. The Wildcats opened the campaign with victories over Poca, 63-43, Sissonville, 80-52, and St. Albans, 71-50. Nitro was first defeated by a good South Charleston ball club, 70-52. This defeat started a losing streak which extended five games. Other losses came at the hands of Barboursville, 70-59, Charleston Catholic, 79-65, Stonewall Jackson, 56-48, and Dunbar, 93-81. Except for Charleston Catholic, each of these opponents was ranked in the top ten in the state at some time during the season. Nitro returned to the winning track by defeating Sissonville, 76-57, and Herbert Hoover, 78- 68. At this point the Wildcats were again defeated by South Charleston, 82-65, but bounced back to take an overtime cliff-hanger from Dupont, 81-80. Nitro was then edged 48-43 by St. Albans in a hotly contested ball game. This was followed by successive defeats at the hands of Stone- wall, 67-61, and Dunbar, 87-67. The Wildcats closed the season with a rush, winning four out of five. Victories were gained over Dupont, 75-73, Herbert Hoover, 80-66, Poca, 77-55, and Bar- boursville, 75-63. The lone defeat was by Charleston Catholic, 74-60. Leading the Nitro cagers throughout the season was Gary Fowler, Ed Ely, and Bill Size- more. Fowler led the team in several departments and was second in the Kanawha Valley Conference in scoring with a 22.1 point-per-game average. Coach Bradford was assisted by Joe Cowley who directed the B team. Nitro has long been a tennis stronghold, and now there seems to be several talented drivers and putters as well. Under the direction of mentor Tom Munsey the boys tennis team is looking forward to an- other winning season, while the girls, coached by Almodie Leurant, await the start of the season with equal enthusiasm. The golf team, directed by Joe Cowley, is also looking forward to the opening match. The Nitro golfers match shots with teams from local schools on some of the most challenging courses in the area. 56 FIRST ROW: L to R: Dick Batman, Steve Ullum, Jimmy Henson, Jeff Hall. BASEBALL TEAM SPORTS OF SPEED Whether down the basepaths, over the hurdles, or across hilly terrain, speed is of the essence in the sports of baseball, track and cross country. Cross-country is new to Nitro this year, but under the direction of coach Carl Bradford it has already proven to be an asset to the athletic program. It is valuable as a conditioner for those wishing to participate in other athletics as well as being a highly competitive sport in its own right. Track, the natural complement to cross country, is rapidly gaining popularity at Nitro and the team is becoming stronger each year. Although it has been somewhat out of the limelight in past years, an expanded program under the guidance of coach Jon Loftis promises to make Nitro a team to reckon with the future. Baseball, the traditional spring pastime, is still con- sidered the favorite sport of many at Nitro High. The Wild- cats have enjoyed many fine seasons in the past, and this year, under the leadership of coach Carl Bradford, should be no exception. COACHES BASEBALL and CROSS COUNTRY: Carl Bradford. TRACK COACH: Jon Loftis. FIRST ROW: L to R: Larry Norvell, Delmer Lilly, Ronnie Simmons, Sollie Bartoe, Tim McDavid, David Dye, Randy McDavid, Jimmy Irwin, and Coach Roy Blizzard. Brook Kelly, Dick Batman, Damon Lett, Tom Brewer, Larry Thompson. WRESTLING TEAM After an absence of one year wrestling returned to Nitro High. This year the Wildcat grap- plers, coached by Roy Blizzard, compiled a record of nine wins and eleven defeats. This record is excellent when you consider the Wildcats were generally younger and less experienced than their opponents. They also operated under a great handicap in that much of the necessary equipment was in ill repair or non-existent. With the attainment of better facilities Nitro should challenge the best teams in the state. 60 COACH: Roy Blizzard SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS Ronnie Bridgette Secretary -Treasurer Bob Meadows President David Dye Vice-President Beverly Adkins Cheryl Alford Johnnie Allen Keith Allen Sharon Angel Cheryl Applegate For the SOPHOMORES Brenda Arthur Clennie Arthur Randy Atkins Gary Bailey Paul Bailey Phil Bailey Vada Ball Sandy Barnett Tom Barth Sollie Bartoe Tommy Bateman Tom Belcher Kathy Blizzard Jerry Boggess Drema Boswell Joann Bower Terry Bowling Nancy Bowman Tom Brewer Bob Brick Ronnie Bridgette Tom Brown Brenda Burdette Connie Burk Judy Cadle Nancy Cadle Cary Caldwell Judy Carpenter Jack Carrier Janet Carney Carl Casto Julia Casto David Cavender John Cavender Tim Cavender Donald Chapman Brenda Cheeks Linda Clark Michael Clark Debbie Clarkson Keith Clendenin Joe Coalter Rebecca Cobb Mary Combs Patricia Combs John Cowley Cynthia Cox this was a beginning. . . As seventh graders we led the upperclassmen a rough life as we scrambled furiously to the next class. Fear dominated our mere existence from 8:30 until 3:15. The clock struck eight and the path was a bit more distinct, but when it struck nine Nitro High School had become an old thing. The second semester of our freshman year, we along with numerous seventh and eighth graders, were transferred to the newly built Jr. High. Some of our most treasured memories lie within the walls of Nitro Jr. High; our first graduation, forming our own student government and electing its leaders; dedications and class day; com- posing and innitiating the school song, but above all, our principal Mr. Reppert, who was re- sponsible for instilling in us an attitude of pride and eagerness to work together as a whole class to meet our goals. He will always be the most important part of that cherished memory. When the clock struck ten we found ourselves once more traveling the halls of NHS, led by President Dave Burdette, Vice-President Joe Skeens, and Secretary and Treasurer Susan McClanahan. It was during this year that we began participating in a new eight period a day schedule. As juniors we became students of decision choosing first our class president-Bob Hutsen- piller, Vice-President Ruth Russell; and Secretary and Treasurer-Sarah Schowen, then de- ciding on class colors, class motto, class rings, and ideas for the prom. In the hall decorating competition we met victory with our theme Massacre Road . The clock struck eleven and the Junior-Senior Prom truly proved to be Some Enchanted Evening. Now the clock is striking twelve, graduation is only seconds away, the twelfth strike of the clock will mean our high school years will be a thing of the past. Our motto, The past holds memories, the future holds promise, seems to be quite appropriate at this dividing hour. We, the graduating class of 1966, believe in Nitro High School. We believe that many prosperous students will enter and exit through its doors as each generation unfolds. Realizing that we must go on to a new hour, a new day, and also a new life, we also believe in ourselves and that we will find the promise that the future future holds. 78 SENIOR CLASS FRANK ADKINS Visual Education-2,3; Electronics Club-2,3; D.O.P.-4. VV'y I believe in the curse of ignorance; in the efficacy of schools; in the dignity of teaching, and in the joy of serving others . . Edwin Osgood Grover 5 Teaching is a natural for me. My mother at one time taught school. I have a sister and several aunts, who are now, or were, teach- ers and I guess they influenced me to enter the field. The students of Nitro High School are proud to have Mrs. Doris Bowers, teacher of the year for 1966, preparing them for their future business years. Mrs. Bowers has succeeded in teaching many students at NHS for the past seventeen years and will be quite an asset for many more. She was selected for her honor from a field of nominees represent- ing twelve counties. Superintendent of Schools, Rex Smith, made the of- ficial announcement and presented her with the certificate. Not only has she been successful in teaching but also as a sponsor of Nitro High School's FTA. This interest in recruiting student teachers stems back to the time when she went to the principal and asked for their sponsorship. The former sponsor had just transferred and I asked for it. I could see an opportunity to guide deserving students into teaching. Activities STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council is organized to develop in the students an appreciation for democratic principles and procedures; to develop the trait of citizenship among the student body; and to en- courage a wholesome atmosphere among the student body and faculty.
