HOMECOMING-1965 The sun shown brightly on the 17th of October, 1964. It was Sat- urday, the day of homecoming for Nitro High School. Colorfully dec- orated floats in pinks, yellows, and whites paraded through the streets of Nitro to the music of the Nitro High School Band. Among the floats, the music, the sunshine, and gaiety, rode five lovely girls, three were competing for the title of Miss Wildcat of 1965. Each of these beauties was to represent her class at Homecoming 1965. Miss Barbara Reger represented the Sophomore Class and Miss Susan McClanahan represented the Junior Class. Jeanne Casto, Mary Martin, and Patti Williams, who represented the Senior Class were competing for the title of Miss Wildcat of 1965. When the half-time ceremonies began, the crowd grew silent, waiting for the appearance of the candidates and their escorts. The five lovely girls and their escorts, walked through the band and the majorettes with all the pomp and ceremony of a royal coronation. As the moment grew near the silence grew deeper as all attention was focused on the three Senior girls. One was to become Miss Wildcat of 1965. Finally the moment came, the name was announced, a cheer went up from the crowd, and two small tears gleamed in the eyes of Mary Martin as she was crowned Miss Wildcat of 1965 by Steve Moore, Stu- dent Council President. Miss Wildcat of 1965 , with one arm holding a spray of mums and the other resting on her escort, Ric Moore, Gave a bright smile and a gleam of happiness appeared along with the two small tears that trick- led down her cheeks.
