BUSINESS MANAGERS Bob Batman and Richie Cline, pictured here with Mayor Alexander, helped to make the NITRONIAN possible through their work in adver- tising. IN RECOGNITION Mr. Fay Harper Recognition is seldom given to that small select group of people in all walks of life who give of themselves unselfishly and contribute their time and energy to the well-being of others. These people who seem tireless in their desire to help their fellow man are always around to lend a helping hand when needed. For the past twenty-two years Nitro High School has been most fortunate to have Mr. Fay Harper on its faculty. There is not one senior in Nitro High who does not remember his Junior-Senior prom, and the man most responsible for the elaborate decorating. Mr. Harper serves as cashier in the cafeteria, collects tickets at every football and basketball game, and acts as a chaperon on band trips. He partic- ipates in many other activities above and beyond the call of duty. Long after all other teachers have gone home for the day, one can usually find Mr. Harper working in his laboratory, going over papers or checking equipment for the next day’s assignment. After spending forty years in the teaching profession, Mr. Harper is retiring this year. Words are in- adequate to express the warm affection of all at Nitro High School. We say . . . Thank you, Mr. Harper. 8 ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY ADMINISTRATION PRINCIPAL Raymond D. Arbogast B.S. Morris Harvey College M.A. Marshall University VICE PRINCIPAL Hubert B. Moore B.S. W. Va. SENIOR. .1965 Tim Cerullo HOMECOMING-1965 The sun shown brightly on the 17th of October, 1964. It was Sat- urday, the day of homecoming for Nitro High School. Colorfully dec- orated floats in pinks, yellows, and whites paraded through the streets of Nitro to the music of the Nitro High School Band. Among the floats, the music, the sunshine, and gaiety, rode five lovely girls, three were competing for the title of Miss Wildcat of 1965. Each of these beauties was to represent her class at Homecoming 1965. Miss Barbara Reger represented the Sophomore Class and Miss Susan McClanahan represented the Junior Class. Jeanne Casto, Mary Martin, and Patti Williams, who represented the Senior Class were competing for the title of Miss Wildcat of 1965. When the half-time ceremonies began, the crowd grew silent, waiting for the appearance of the candidates and their escorts. The five lovely girls and their escorts, walked through the band and the majorettes with all the pomp and ceremony of a royal coronation. As the moment grew near the silence grew deeper as all attention was focused on the three Senior girls. One was to become Miss Wildcat of 1965. Finally the moment came, the name was announced, a cheer went up from the crowd, and two small tears gleamed in the eyes of Mary Martin as she was crowned Miss Wildcat of 1965 by Steve Moore, Stu- dent Council President. Miss Wildcat of 1965 , with one arm holding a spray of mums and the other resting on her escort, Ric Moore, Gave a bright smile and a gleam of happiness appeared along with the two small tears that trick- led down her cheeks. HOMECOMING HALLS During homecoming week, the senior, junior, and sophomore classes were busily engaged in decorating their respective halls for the forthcoming event. The halls of Nitro High School depicted motifs chosen by the classes. These decorations served to boost the homecoming spirit; a trophy was awarded to the class with the best decorated hall. This coveted honor was captured by the Junior Class, whose theme was Massacre Road . The entrance to the Cafeteria, ingeniously decorated with the mighty Wildcat. The promise of excitement was fulfilled at the annual Winter Formal held December 12 in the Nitro High School gymnasium with over one hundred couples attending. Lovely and romantic describes the formal in its entirity. Jolly Ole Saint Nick, who was seated in a sleigh driven by eight tiny reindeer, made his first appearance in Nitro at the Winter Formal. TIM CERULLO . MARY MARTIN ...........President . . . Vice President Secretary-Treasurer SENIOR CLASS HISTORY 1965 Our class song says There's a place for us, somewhere a place for us.” For the past six years our place has been Nitro High School -- its classes, its activities, and its people. During our sophomore year we elected Fred Romine, president; Nick Ramsey, vice president; and Butch Miller, secretary-treasurer. The three groups of underclassmen moved into the new Nitro Junior High School, making us the last class to graduate from a six year Nitro High School. Our Junior year was marked by many events. Led by Richie Cline as president, Nick Ramsey as vice president, and Nancy Barton as secretary-treasurer, we ordered our class rings and planned a successful prom with the theme Bon Voyage . Student Council elections were held and victors were Steve Moore, president; Robert Thomas, vice president; and Nancy Barton, secretary-treasurer. The 1964-1965 year was the high point of our school career. Our basketball team had a successful season; and, for the first time in our school's history, the senior class play was a musical comedy. Richie Cline, president; Tim Cerello, vice president; and Mary Martin, secretary-treasurer were elected to lead our senior class. Now, as we leave Nitro to begin our careers and advanced education, we face the task of finding our place in the world; but we will always remember the years at Nitro High School as our time together with time to spare, time to learn, time to care . 45 SENIOR HELEN LEE ABBOTT FTA-4; GAA-3,4; Gym Helper-4;Span. Thus far, we have faced defeat as well as victory, tears as well as smiles. Already we have had to face decisions. None of these, however, can compare with the decisions of the coming years. Through our ability as students, we will be able to meet with and overcome the problems of the future. We realize that the future can only be what we make it. For this reason we have chosen the motto The future holds promise; the past holds memories. 93 JUNIOR Frank Adkins David Akers Sue Alderson Danny Allen John Allen Karen Allison Anita Angel Dennie
