FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK. . . John F. Santrock Principal NITRO HIGH SCHOOL Joftn 9. Santv si, O xinaipal N't . V'r9,n‘ January 15, 1963 To che Senior Class of 1963: The beautiful song from which you have chosen your theme, You'll Never Walk Alone , begins with descriptions of darkness and storms, but concludes with a golden sky and the sweet silver song of the lark. We read in the Twenty-Third Psalin, Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.' Theodore Roosevelt summed it up when he urged men to 'Dare mi”hty things' rather chan to Live in that gray twilight which knows neither victory nor defeat. The song, Che Bible, and man each, I think, were talking about an affair of the spirit. It is chat spirit that shuns the twilight zone and chooses unquestioningly the sunny side of the street. It is on che sunny side that foresight is most acute and vision is uncluttered with dim and forbidding shadows. It is on the sunny side that' a man walks proudly, erect, full of plans for the future. It is the path of freedom, of the pride in the creativity of man, and in his God-given integrity. It is the path to great- ness for all mankind. As you leave Nicro High School, I trust that each of you will weather the storm, chat you will hold your head up high to hear the song of the silver lark for; success is yours when you trust in God, have faith in fellow man, and confidence in self, then truly. You'll Never Walk Alone. Sincerely, ohn F. Helina Scott, G.A.A. president, and Fred Mc- Cleery, Student Council vice president, await the moment for crowning Miss Wildcat. Excitedly poised for hearing the name of the 1963 Miss Wildcat, our Cheerleaders exhibit a variety of emotions. At last the exciting moment comes. The crowning of Marcia Lyle as Miss Wildcat - 1963. Senior Class History Blazing our trails through Nitro High School has proven challenging, enjoyable, and on occasion, hazardous to those of us who are the Nitro High School seniors of 1963. Poised uncertainly upon the brink of graduation, we dare not panic, though beset with fears as we wrestle with decisions. Yes, this is the most important year we have lived, thus far, and, suddenly, an adult status seems thrust upon us. In his own heart each of us wonders, Can I measure up to what life expects of me? Guiding our class in the untried pathways of our freshman year were: Raymond Shamblin, Pres- ident; Steve Thurman, Vice President; and Sherol Rook, Secretary-Treasurer. Their leadership saw us through the tremulous year, and, presently we were more highly respected and certainly were sophisticated sophomores. During our sophomore year, we realized that we must burn the midnight oil in order to trans- pose our dreams to realities. To steer our class, we chose David Lee as President, Ronna Null as Vice President, and Brian Willard as Secretary-Treasurer. Our junior year was highlighted with the ordering of class rings and the Junior-Senior Prom. We chose for the prom a unique oriental setting with the theme of Teahouse of the August Moon. Serving as guiding hands for this year of turmoil and excitement were; David Lee, President; Keith Chapman, Vice President; and Hank Cloxton, Secretary-Treasurer. This year we came into our own as more mature members of the student body; as upper-class- men whose presence was observed by the freshmen and sophomores who dreamed of the time when they would occupy our places as hosts at the prom, possessors of class rings. This year, too, four members of our class distinguished themselves by qualifying in the National Merit Scholarship com- petition: These seniors are: David Lee, Mike Roark, Dean Miller, and Fred McCleery. Our senior class officers are: Bill Brown, President; Steve Barrickman, Vice President; and David Guill, Secretary-Treasurer. Our senior class play, All In The Family, was presented in December of 1962, with thirteen seniors participating in the cast, and many more making a behind-the-scenes contribution. Hard on the heels of our return from Christmas vacation, and with the advent of the second term, the Junior and Senior High Schools were separated. This was a first in the history of our present high school structure which had bulged to overflow since its opening in March 1955. The abandoned portable buildings stand now as ghosts of a former era. As we take our first steps to Pomp and Circumstance, we shall feel nostalgia mingled with a sense of achievement. Through our paradoxical emotions we shall proudly and sincerely join in the meaningful chorus of our Alma Mater, when we, as students, make our final exit from our beloved Nitro High School. 45 Senior BILLIE JEAN ALEXANDER Majorette 2,3,4; Head 4; Band 1,2, 3,4; Best Mixer 3; Nat. Football At NITRO vs HUNTINGTON CENTRAL After attending a two week training session at Camp Virgil Tate, the Nitro Wildcats lost their opener September 8, to the Pony Express by a score of 60-12. While Huntington scored for the most part by very long passes, both Nitro 's touchdowns were tallied by tailback Vernon Redman. NITRO vs ST. ALBANS The September 15, meeting of the St. Albans Red Dragons proved disastrous for Nitro. Though held to only 22 yards from scrimmage by a tough Wildcat line, St. Albans completed long passes for their 46-6 victory; Nitro's lone score was achieved by stand-out Vernon Redman, co-captain. A 70 yard drive was begun late in the fourth quarter but time ran out with the Wildcats on the 1 yard line. NITRO vs SOUTH CHARLESTON Redman Gains Ground Against Tough S. C. Defense. Wildcat gridders smashed their way 70 yards to take the lead in scoring Saturday night, Sep- tember 15. Senior wingback Brian Willard zipped around the end on a reverse to break the ice and put Nitro in the lead 7-0 with an extra point by Okey Redman. The outlook turned dismal though as the Black Eagles roared back by 39 points at the final gun. Nitro completed only the one touchdown. NITRO vs DUPONT The DuPont Panthers were in for quite a sur- prise as Nitro coped all honors with a 26-24 vic- tory, September 21. The Red and Black roared into the attack with the flipping of two passes from Vernon Redman to Sr. right end Steve White for 55 yards, and 15 yards and a touchdown. A recovered fumble by Jerry Lemon later set up another Redman score on a six yard run. Redman’s last two scores of the game involved six and 15 yard runs respec- tively. DuPont's burst of power came late in the fourth quarter. 136 Nitro High School NITRO vs DUNBAR In the true style of football thrillers, Nitro battled a tough Bulldog Eleven, October 5 only to lose in the last 20 seconds of play by one point. It was Vernon Okey Redman in the limelight as he raced across the ”o strip twice to put the Wild- cats ahead 12-6. In the final seconds the death blow was felt as Dunbar completed a pass into the end zone and completed the extra point. The final score: Dunbar 13, Nitro 12. NITRO vs SISSONVILLE The tremendous Wildcat defense held the Sissonville Indians to no points scored October 13 as the offense racked 27. Redman shone as he tallied twice in the third period while gaining 182 yards (at the time he had scored 10 TD's in seven games). Wingback Brian Willard scored the first six points in the second period on a 29 yard run. The final score came when Sr. halfback Frank Waugh grabbed a Sissonville pass and scampered 87 yards to pay dirt. NITRO vs PT. PLEASANT Fans saw the upset of a Nitro Eleven as two grid iron giants battled for supremacy, October 20. Defense was the watchword as Nitro was not able to score and a team previously known for its high scores was held to seven points. On different occasions Pt. Pleasant drove deep into Nitro ter- ritory only to be stopped by a determined Wildcat Eleven. Nitro 's biggest scoring threat came in the second period on a recovered fumble. A field goal attempt was to be made but time ran out. NITRO vs MONTGOMERY It was Sr. tailback Vernon Redman all the way as the Wildcats whitewashed the Greyhounds of Montgomery, October 24. An early Nitro score was parried by a 'Hound come-back of six points. On the next play though, Jim Wright, Jr. halfback re- turned the kick-off to the 40 yd. line and then lat- eraled to Vernon Redman who went on for the tally. Wright showed himself again late in the fourth quarter when he added six points on an end sweep. When the gun sounded it was Nitro 38, Mont- gomery 12 with Redman scoring five touchdowns. Coaches Bickle and Whittington; said one football player, Wonder what we could have done to make him happy?” The Nitro Wildcats bowed to a determined Elk Herd November 3, 18-13 in a thriller. Though the 'Cats pulled some great plays, such as a 35 yd. TD up the middle of a tough Elkview line, they were not able to pull the game out of the fire. Though Nitro posed several scoring threats, the Elks came from behind to take the game. NITRO vs POCA The Poca Dots were the target of the Wild- cats' wrath November 10 as Nitro emerged vic- torious in their last game. Snowballing in en- thusiasm, the Wildcats rolled up a ground attack totaling 430 yards with work-horse Vernon Redman gaining 227. Nitro scored in the second period of play with Jim Wright carrying the ball 80 yards, and again in the third quarter with Redman going 12 yards for the score. On the 5 yd. line with 1st and goal to go, a touch down was called back on an off-sides bringing the ball back to the 10 yd. line. At this point time ran out. Seven fumbles, one of which was recovered by Nitro, hurt the Kittens. On Sept. 20 the Kittens bowed 6-0 to an Elkview eleven. Nitro was again hampered by fumbles, six in all. The improving defense held the Elks to three first downs. Spring Hill was unable to secure any first downs in a 32-7 romp by Nitro. Spring Hill’s lone tallie came in the 4th Quarter on a 65 yard run against the third team. Both Sissonville and St. Albans were shut out 26-0 and 25-0 respectively by the Nitro Wild- kittens; neither team was able to make a single first down. On October 18 Nitro's mighty Wildkittens tossed South Charleston by the wayside 13-6. South Charleston obtained three first downs. Nitro succumbed to the blows of a tough Dunbar team in a 21-6 thriller. Receiv- ing, the kick-off, the Kitten's 30 yd. line was next.
