John F. Santrock Principal NITRO HIGH SCHOOL £okn 9. £ant oc£, O xinciftal N‘t o- irginia To Members of the 1962 Senior Class: On the eve of the astronaut»s flight into orbit, many mountains, some small others large, have been overcome by many people. This country was not built by timid souls whose future could not be guaranteed, or those who could measure the degree of risk to which tneir ventures might be exposed. It was built by those whose in- tuitive grasp of opoortunity was over and above statistical need: by those who backed their luck with courage, with faith, and with resolution. However simple or complicated the task, there are manv mountains to overcome. Only those who have the natience and tire to do the simple things perfectly will be able to conouer the most difficult things. We hope there have been many valuable results from your association with Mitro High School, but if there should be one most valuable perhaps I would wish for each of you the ability to make yourselves do the thing you ought to do when it ought to be done, whether vou have to io it or not. ?4any of you have made definite decisions in further study, vocational opportunities, or entering the service. The road leading to the too of the mountain does seem difficult and sometimes those who are supposed to help you, place mountain rocks or pitfalls in vour paths, someone has said, nLack of will cower has caused more failure than lack of intelligence or ability. Also Oliver Goldsmith once stated. Our greatest, glory consists not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. “ 3 ReaHy I would like to continue quoting great thoughts from great men and their ideas o how to succeed, but may I close with these: The man is not greatest who has the greatest number of servants but the man is greatest who serves the greatest number of people , E. Stanley Jones; and then, You !! never get ahead unless you know the right person—yourself , Harold Coffman. In life there can be high mountains, many of them can strangle vou, but if you do vour best each time in everything you attempt, thev soon seem sr.all and few in number. Climb Every Mountain each time you are called to the task. r John F. Santrock, Principal 8
