As we stand there drinking in the familiar sights and sounds of home, a small, cheerful woman turns toward us. On her face we see reflected a continuing memory of the satisfaction of long devotion to the education of future homemakers. In 1924 Miss Virginia Martin was added to the faculty of Nitro High School, as a teacher of home economics. During the Easter season of 1925, she became Mrs. Harry K. Miller. With the exception of an absence of one and one-half years, she has taught continuously. During her career she has been beset by many problems all of which she has overcome with insight and patience. There was, however, one which she could not quite resolve. In the last days of the old school building, rain would come dripping through the roof. Of course, all hopes of cooking were lost since all pots and pans were needed to catch the rain. The loud dripping of the water into the utensils was so distrubing that nothing could be done. Finally, however, the new building was completed and Mrs. Miller was moved into a modern kitchen. Not only has Mrs. Miller's effort been applied to academic pursuits, but also to extracurricular activities through sponsorship of several clubs. In honor and appreciation of this devotion and long service, we, the Senior Class of Nitro High School, dedicate the 1962 WILDCAT to Mrs. Virginia Miller. p. xkl jUa. j ‘Tt-. Santrock Principal NITRO HIGH SCHOOL £okn 9. £ant oc£, O xinciftal N‘t o- irginia To Members of the 1962 Senior Class: On the eve of the astronaut s flight into orbit, many mountains, some small others large, have been overcome by many people. This country was not built by timid souls whose future could not be guaranteed, or those who could measure the degree of risk to which tneir ventures might be exposed. It was built by those whose in- tuitive grasp of opoortunity was over and above statistical need: by those who backed their luck with courage, with faith, and with resolution. However simple or complicated the task, there are manv mountains to overcome. Only those who have the natience and tire to do the simple things perfectly will be able to conouer the most difficult things. We hope there have been many valuable results from your association with Mitro High School, but if there should be one most valuable perhaps I would wish for each of you the ability to make yourselves do the thing you ought to do when it ought to be done, whether vou have to io it or not. ?4any of you have made definite decisions in further study, vocational opportunities, or entering the service. The road leading to the too of the mountain does seem difficult and sometimes those who are supposed to help you, place mountain rocks or pitfalls in vour paths, someone has said, nLack of will cower has caused more failure than lack of intelligence or ability. Also Oliver Goldsmith once stated. Our greatest, glory consists not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall. “ 3 ReaHy I would like to continue quoting great thoughts from great men and their ideas o how to succeed, but may I close with these: The man is not greatest who has the greatest number of servants but the man is greatest who serves the greatest number of people , E. Stanley Jones; and then, You !! never get ahead unless you know the right person—yourself , Harold Coffman. In life there can be high mountains, many of them can strangle vou, but if you do vour best each time in everything you attempt, thev soon seem sr.all and few in number. Climb Every Mountain each time you are called to the task. r John F. Santrock, Principal 8 VICE PRINCIPAL Mr. Ray Arbogast B.S. Peggy Smith Sue Ann Thompson SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS President Jimmy Summers Vice President Stan Abrams Secretary Randy Alexander 1962 CLASS HISTORY Education played a large part in our four years of high school, but such factors as basketball games, pep assemblies, football games, school parties, and other school functions helped keep our rapt attention toward Nitro High School. Our Freshman year was highlighted by being able to choose some of our own classes. Latin and first-year algebra presented unlimited educational advancement possibilities. Our goals and standards began to acquire definite form and we watched in awe the upper classmen, waiting for our turn at all the activities. Dallas Shamblin was President of our Freshman class, Kaye Cooke was Vice-President and Linda Cochran, Secretary-Treasurer. During our Sophomore year we learned the joy of disecting a frog. Spanish, Latin, and French opened new portals of language to us and we were caught in a new whirl of senior high games and activities. Led by Vic Ferrari, President, Karen Harris, Vice-President and Linda Cochran, Sec- retary-Treasurer, our class proved to be a capable and adept group of students. As Juniors, our goals had become definite and we were kept busy, whether it was trying to meet the deadline for the school paper, or in a geometry class, or in a chemistry class. Our abilities were tested and proven. With Charles Dye as our able President, Howard Janey as Vice-President and Sue Anderson as Secretary-Treasurer, we were confronted with the Junior-Senior Prom. Imagi- nations were tested and proven and after weeks of hard work with fun intermingled, the Junior Class presented the Seniors with an enchanting and memorable prom. Lights for the football field highlighted the beginning of our Senior year along with thethrillsof being mighty Seniors. Jimmy Summers as President, Stan Abrams as Vice- President, and Randy Alexander as Secretary-Treasurer, led the Senior Class through its many functions and responsibilities. Beverly Linville, Janice Richards, Peggy Smith, and Sue Ann Thompson were the top four Seniors in the class, having the highest grade averages. Educationalopportunities, lasting friendships, and sincere happiness have been offered by Nitro High School. We have accepted these and will remember them always. 25 SENIORS WILLIAM STANLEY ABRAMS Class V. Pres. 4; Football Manager 2,3,4; Baseball 1,2; Choir 4; Prom Com. 3; Mas- quers 4; F.T.A. 4. For the past two years, he has participated in the National Tennis Tournaments and Mid- Atlantic Tennis Tournaments. Last year Bob and his partner advanced to the finals of the Mid- Atlantic Doubles. Brown-haired and blue-eyed Bob is former State 15 and under champion and currently shares the State 15 and under doubles title. Vic Ferrari, an impressive senior, has led the track team. In the South Charleston Invitational he broke a record when he ran the 880 in 2 minutes, 6 seconds. He captured second place in the Gazette Relays, running the 880 in 2 minutes, 3 seconds. In theState Qualifying Meet he ran the 880 in 2.3, winning first place, and placed third in the 440. In the State Meet he placed fourth in the 880 and fifth in the 440. Several other members of the team show much promise. Vic Ferrari Nitro Track Star 155 WEIGHT LIFTING TEAM This team, sponsored by Coach Whittington, is primarily a body-building course. The boys lift weights religiously to keep in shape for football next year as well as other sports.
