The students—their faces are as varied as their personalities and interests. There are some quiet ones, and some noisy and gay ones; some studious ones, and some that are not so studious. Each adds his own contribu- tion to that wonderful and magical thing called school spirit.

JOYCE LEE PRISCILLA SMITH VALEDICTORIAN CLASS HISTORY SALUTATORIAN OF 1960 The long-awaited moment arrives, and the seniors of 1960 are alert for the signal to begin the graduation march. As realization of the finality of this hour dawns upon them, a somber hush of reflection falls over the group. Varied memories momentarily push the present aside, briefly transporting us to the beginning of our adventures through high school. With the advent of the freshman year, we found ourselves moving along with some uncertainty, but nevertheless with determination. To set the pace we elected, George Hall as president, Bill Hall as vice- president and Bobby Walker as secretary-treasurer. Feeling more confident of our abilities, we met our sophomore year resolved to conquer the many challenges that the year would offer. To direct our course over the hurdles we chose Russell Board, Bill Hall, and Sharon Wagner as president, vice-president and secretary-treasurer. Having established ourselves as a definite part of Nitro High, we moved onward anticipating the ordering of class rings and the arrival of the Junior-Senior Prom. We now began to know what we wanted from life and planned our curriculum around our individual goals and aspirations. Chemistry revealed its fas- cinating mysteries; foreign languages stimulated an interest in far away places; and trig and geometry presented themselves for the more calculating minds. To guide us through the maze of activities and new responsibilities, we selected Wilbur Winter as presi- dent, Kermit Null as vice-president, and Judy Long Null as secretary-treasurer. Entering the home stretch, we suddenly realized that the object of our efforts and strivings was almost within our grasp. Upon becoming seniors, we were im- mersed in a whirlpool of plans and preparations for graduation. To render that final service of guidance to our class, we gave the responsibility to Kermit Null, Sharon Carder, and Jo Anne Higginbotham as president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer. As we are jolted back to the present by the strains of ’’Pomp and Circumstance”, we shake off the ghost of Memory. Embellishing solemn commencement attire with shining expectation and fervent hope, we proudly begin our march into the adult world. Now, almost as if we are freshman again, we embark upon this new sojourn, our uncertainties surpassed by strength de- rived from faith in our fellowman, our country, our future and our God. 26
