FOREWORD... This is Nitro High School, the stage and setting upon which we have enacted varied phases of our school life. Here we continued that long and arduous climb to the world of adulthood. A whole new and exciting world of learning was opened to us through the guidance and understanding of its teachers. Here we made new friends who shared our joys and disappointments. This is Nitro High School, more than just a school. It is a place that lives and breathes with the everlasting spirit of the students who have passed through its por- tals, as well as those who are now within its walls. It is a storehouse of treasured memories that will never die. Now, as we stand on the threshold of an entirely new and different life, we re- alize more than ever what it means to each of us. As we part, each going his sep- arate way, perhaps never to meet again and certainly never to be the same, one thing will remain with us as long as we live: the happy, carefree years we spent with loved friends at Nitro High. Santrock, Jr., Principal Nitro High School Nitro, West Virginia Dear Mr. Santrock: To you the 1960 graduating class dedicates its annual, The Wildcat. We salute you, the first Nitro born, Nitro educated principal of the high school from which you, too were graduated. You have brought honor and recognition to the school as student, athlete, teacher, principal, and citizen. Augmenting and perhaps eclipsing those distinctions are your contributions to us as individuals at a time when world shaking events have tended to create chaos and uncertainty in the minds and hearts of youth. By counsel, friendship, and example you have lighted our way from trouble to triumph; from panic to peace; from confusion to conviction. Whatever our future success, it will have been touched and inspired by the professional skill, the warmth of personality, the steadying hand which you unfailingly extend to us, often without our having to seek it. As each of us goes his way, he feels a mingled sense of gratitude and appreciation for having been privileged to share important formative years under the leadership of you, our friend, counselor, and principal, Mr. John F. Santrock, Jr. Gratefully, The Senior Class of 1960 5 ADMINISTRATION The administration—those who keep the wheels of our school efficiently turning, while bearing the responsibility of preparing the students for their role as adults. Through all of the time-consuming and patience-de- stroying hours they spend, they will be found guiding each student toward his ultimate goal with understanding and foresight. PRINCIPAL NITRD HIGH SCHOOL John r. Bantrooc. principal Nitro. West Virginia JOHN F. SANTROCK To the Seniors of I960: Our first thought of Nitro High School is of the physical features: the beautiful yellow brick building, gymnasium, library, halls, etc. Yes, these physical characteristics are important to Nitro High School, but of more importance are the students who roam these hails of that physical plant. The poet has said, Not what we have, but what we use, Not what we see, but what we choose. These are the things that mar or bless The sum of human happiness. One of the fundamental purposes of education is to develop and make you a well-rounded individual. Nitro High School has constantly striven to provide opportunity for the individual to grow and achieve full realization of his potentalities. Seniors, may I congratulate you collectively on your fine accomplishments. You have come through with flying colors. Each of you must be proud, and you de- serve to be proud. You must continue to make the most of your opportunities and not let them go by default. You have made a most promising start in life. May your lives fulfill this promise, and may they also serve as an inspiration to other students following in your footsteps. As you have met this milestone, may you dedicate yourselves, realizing to the fullest the opportunities that lie ahead. Sincerely yours. 4ohn F. Santrock, Principal Nitro High School Mr. Raymond D. NON-TEACHING PERSONNEL Preparing a nourishing and appetizing meal is no easy job even under nor- mal circumstances, let alone doing it for an army of hungry students; but every day you'll find the cooks turning out meals with clock-work accuracy and effi- ciency. Sara Krantz, Ima Anderson, Minnie Brewer MUSIC PHYSICAL EDUCATION Physical education is a class that is well liked by many of the students. It contains a va- riety of events at Nitro High School. At Nitro we go along with A strong mine in a healthy body. DEPARTMENTS MATH Math is a subject that is being stressed all over the nation and Nitro High School is no excep- tion. Nitro has an accelerated program in math this year which includes higher and college math. The students taking music at Nitro learn more than just how to sing. This course also includes dancing. Another phase of music is the Nitro High School Band. ART CLASS The art department of Nitro High School is quite modern. Under the su- pervision of Miss Toussaint, the stu- dents enter a new world of talents and creativeness. DEPARTMENTS MECHANICAL DRAWING The mechanical drawing class of Nitro High School helps to prepare the boys who take it for a future vocation or hobby. INDUSTRIAL ARTS The industrial arts class, with its modern equipment will play an impor- tant part in the future lives of the boys at Nitro High School. BUSINESS EDUCATION The business education depart- ment will render definite assistance to those students of Nitro who plan to become the future business leaders of America. LIBRARY The library of Nitro High School, under the capable supervision of Mrs. Garrett, is an up-to- date room of knowledge where the students are wel- come to come to broaden their education. SCIENCE DEPARTMENTS The chemistry class is just one of the science classes offered at Nitro High School. This year, science is heavily stressed and a full science program is offered. HOME ECONOMICS This branch of home economics is one of the classes offered at Nitro. Sew- ing is also on the home economics pro- gram of Nitro High School. These class- es will be enjoyed and long remembered by the girls at Nitro High School. LANGUAGES ENGLISH A most important department at Ni- tro is the English department. The Stu- dents at Nitro recieved a well-rounded education in both grammar and litera- ture. Latin I class is just one of three Languages offered at Nitro High School. Also available to the students are Latin II, Spanish I and H and French I. 9 SOCIAL STUDIES Pictured at the left is a class in problems of our democracy. This is just one of the many class- es in the social studies program at Nitro High School. The students—their faces are as varied as their personalities and interests. There are some quiet ones, and some noisy and gay ones; some studious ones, and some that are not so studious. Each adds his own contribu- tion to that wonderful and magical thing called school spirit. JOYCE LEE PRISCILLA SMITH VALEDICTORIAN CLASS HISTORY SALUTATORIAN OF 1960 The long-awaited moment arrives, and the seniors of 1960 are alert for the signal to begin the graduation march. As realization of the finality of this hour dawns upon them, a somber hush of reflection falls over the group. Varied memories momentarily push the present aside, briefly transporting us to the beginning of our adventures through high school. With the advent of the freshman year, we found ourselves moving along with some uncertainty, but nevertheless with determination. To set the pace we elected, George Hall as president, Bill Hall as vice- president and Bobby Walker as secretary-treasurer. Feeling more confident of our abilities, we met our sophomore year resolved to conquer the many challenges that the year would offer. To direct our course over the hurdles we chose Russell Board, Bill Hall, and Sharon Wagner as president, vice-president and secretary-treasurer. Having established ourselves as a definite part of Nitro High, we moved onward anticipating the ordering of class rings and the arrival of the Junior-Senior Prom. We now began to know what we wanted from life and planned our curriculum around our individual goals and aspirations. Chemistry revealed its fas- cinating mysteries; foreign languages stimulated an interest in far away places; and trig and geometry presented themselves for the more calculating minds. To guide us through the maze of activities and new responsibilities, we selected Wilbur Winter as presi- dent, Kermit Null as vice-president, and Judy Long Null as secretary-treasurer. Entering the home stretch, we suddenly realized that the object of our efforts and strivings was almost within our grasp. Upon becoming seniors, we were im- mersed in a whirlpool of plans and preparations for graduation. To render that final service of guidance to our class, we gave the responsibility to Kermit Null, Sharon Carder, and Jo Anne Higginbotham as president, vice-president, and secretary-treasurer. As we are jolted back to the present by the strains of ’’Pomp and Circumstance”, we shake off the ghost of Memory. Embellishing solemn commencement attire with shining expectation and fervent hope, we proudly begin our march into the adult world. Now, almost as if we are freshman again, we embark upon this new sojourn, our uncertainties surpassed by strength de- rived from faith in our fellowman, our country, our future and our God. 26 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS JoAnne Higginbotham. . . . Mary Knapp 131 NITRO HIGH SCHOOL BAND BAND DIRECTOR SENIOR BAND MEMBERS BAND ASSISTANTS BOB PRUETT Versatile Bob Pruett has attained high tennis honors in 1959. Bob has been playing tennis seriously for only one year and is now a member of the Charleston Tennis Club. Bob is the West Virginia State 12 and under champion. In August the Nitro youngster traveled to Pittsburg, Pennsylvania for the Edgeworth In- vitational. Bob was runner-up in the 13 and under division of singles. Before tennis came along Bob played Little League baseball, and presently is a member of the Nitro Junior High Basketball and Football team. He was named on the honorable mention team of the LKV Football Conference. While maintaining a B average in his schoolwork, Bob is looking forward to this summer and tournament time. The brown haired eighth grader will graduate in the 15 and under division, but stands an excellent chance of winning numerous matches. Undoubtedly Bob will again be number 1 man on the scholastic junior high team for the second consecutive year. 134 IN John Santrock, a dark haired junior, has claimed high honors in the field of tennis. His remarkable feats include the titles of Charleston Tennis Club Champion for the past three years, and State Boys Tennis Champion, both singles and doubles, State Jaycee Singles Champion, and Char- leston Jaycee Champion for the years 1957 and 1958. In 1958 John traveled to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, for the National Jaycees Tournament, however, he lost in the semi- finals of a consolation round. He also was defeated in the third round of the Middle Atlantics Match to Jim Busick, ranking number eight in the nation, after leading him 4-1 in the initial set. The year 1959 was an eventful year for John since he took the State Junior Boys, State Scholastic, State Jaycee, and Charleston Jaycee Championships, in the junior boys bracket. He was number one man on the Char- leston Junior Davis Cup Team, whose itin- erary included five states and Canada. They compiled a combined record of 7-1 against cities including Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, and Toronto. John also ranked first on a team which lost only one match while winning a four city tournament at Springfield, Ohio. He traveled to Kalamazoo, Michigan, for the National Championships, only later to lose to the Pacific Northwest Champion. Afterwards he journeyed to Phoenix, Ari- zona, the scene of the National Jaycees Tournaments, where he lost to Mike Neely, top rated man on the Yale Freshman Team. John played a preliminary match at the Charleston Civic Center to the pro- fessional tennis group of Pancho Gonzales and Lew Hoad. JOHN SANTROCK NIS 135 SPOR m Regardless of what sport it may be, it will give that necessary element of com- petition. Through this competition we gain pride for our school, and through this bond of pride we become a close-knit student body. FOOTBALL STATISTICS On September 12 the Wildcats opened their season by mauling the Elkherd of Elkview at Underwood Field. The opening kickoff depicted a prosperous season as the Wildcats roared eighty-eight yards for their first tally of the year. Nitro continued to pound out yardage for the remainder of the day and thus ended their first contest in a 25-6 victory over the Elkherd. The following Saturday arch-rival St. Albans played host to the Wildcats in a hard- fought, always unpredictable match of skill and endurance. In this one the hardhitting Wildcats suffered a heart-breaking loss at the hands of the Dragons by a 7-6 score. The third game of the 59-60 campaign proved to be a different story, however, as the visiting South Charleston Black Eagles received a taste of defeat at the hands of Coach Jim Stover and Company. The Cats clipped the eagle's wings by piling up an 18-13 vic- tory. On October 2 our boys invaded Dupont of the Panther field. The Wildcats struck pay dirt that night as they swamped the Panthers 24-6 in four quarters of unexcelled football. On the following Saturday afternoon the Wildcats entertained the Dunbar Bulldogs who out-scored us 15-6. The Wildcats traveled to Sissonville on October 17, and in an effort to get back into the winning column, handily defeated a very tough tribe by a close 26-20 score. The next session held a dark out-look for Nitro as the un-surrendering Big Blacks of Pt. Pleasant pulled from a 19-19 tie in the closing minutes to drop the unsuspecting Wild- cats into a 25-19 defeat. Things turned to a sweeter note on October 31 when the Wildcats swamped the Pirates of Barboursville. The crowning of the Homecoming Queen, pert and pretty Joanne Higginbotham, seemed to enthuse the Wildcats as they recovered from a 13-7 half-time deficit to stun the Pirates 25-13. In the next contest, the Wildcats fell to defeat at the hands of a strong Stonewall Jack- son eleven. Although the scoreboard showed a 7-6 loss for the Cats , they made the Generals trimble before the final gun. A night game at Poca on November 13 brought the Wildcat season to a close as they blotted the Dots by the score of 39-13. Thus ended another Wildcat season with the Cats exiting with pride, confident that they had done another commendable, un-surpassed job which could be said well-done.
