VALEDICTORIAN Jackie Reed SALUTATORI AN Toni Smith CLASS HISTORY OF 1959 It is clearing now—the mist—that murky cloud that haunts us. Four years of struggle, excitement, and sometimes misunderstanding have brought us to where we are. That eternal mist is dropping memories too; memories of things we can never experience again and memories of things bound to shape our destiny. With anxiety and restlessness we plunged into our fresh- man year, to be quieted somewhat by algebra, civics, and Latin. Some tried out for band and various sports, while others were elected to the Student Council. To lead us through that uncertain first year of high school we chose Virginia Agee to execute the duties of President. Londa Jividen was Vice-President and Jack Sturgeon, Secretary- Treasurer. We were pretty sure of ourselves that second year of our high school days, and showed it as we confidently waded into the theory of geometry, collections of biology, and the con- tinued study of history and English. To carry the light forus down the sophomore path we selected Frank Grover as our President, Larry Wilson, Vice-President, and Linda Robey, Secretary-Treasurer. As the crucial third lap of our journey began, we became more critical of the things about us and participated in more than ever before. Our minds produced a newspaper, probed the mysteries of chemistry, and challenged the fundamentals of higher math. Proudly we ordered our class rings and even more excitedly awaited their arrival as the Junior-Senior Prom drew close. With ’’Sayonara” as the theme of our Prom, we neared the end of our year as ’’jolly juniors.” To lead us that year we elected Clayton Allison, President, Joyce Jarrett, Vice-President, and Jeanette McGinn, Secretary-Treasurer. Now we are seniors, incredible as it seems to us, for all those yesterdays have passed so swiftly. With Jerry Flowers as President, Steve Lambert, Vice-President, and Jackie Reed,Secretary-Treasurer, we have ordered our caps, gowns, announcements, and cards. Shining brightly in the mist before us are college gates, new jobs, and a completely different life. We wish to hesitate to get our balance, but we dare not, for we are afraid the fast-running sands of time will leave us behind. 24
