DEPARTMENTS SCIENCE ENGLISH In this era of man-made satel- lites and artificial planets, science is of ever-increasing importance. Everyone, not only atomic en- gineers, can apply the principles of general science, biology, chemistry, and physics to his life. English is the national language of the United States. By learning to write and speak correct English, we are able to com- municate with others. SOCIAL STUDIES Pictured at the right is a class in problems of our democracy. This is just a small part of the social studies program at Nitro High School.

NON TEACHING STAFF Much of the enjoyment of school life is dependent upon the well-kept building and healthful lunches. The custodians and cooks are responsible for these two very important factors in our daily life.

BUSINESS EDUCATION One of the largest occupational fields in America today is open to the clerical student. A person skilled in typing, short- hand, and bookkeeping can rest as- sured that there is always a position open for him in the business world. i MATHEMATICS Nitro High School is very proud of its math department, which is one of the best in West Virginia. Nearly everyone uses some form of mathematics every day. Everyone faces problems in arithmetic and NH S offers them the material with which to solve them. REMEDIAL READING Reading is the basis for all other school work. This is an integral part of the life of every student. Realizing the importance of read- ing, Nitro High has added a special remedial reading class to instill in the students a desire to read for knowledge and the special enjoyment that only a book can give.
