Text from Pages 1 - 150 of the 1959 volume:

Foreword Alone in an empty schoolhouse, proudly clutching the long-awaited-for diplomas, our past years at Nitro gently unfold and form a familiar procession before misty eyes. We feel..................... . . .the hushed stillness at assembly when clear voices reverently repeat the LORD'S Prayer . . . . . .a warmth spread through Nitro High when Christmas holidays are near ... a river of excitement swelling when a beautiful big dance is nigh. Faintly, amidst the endless chatter and slamming of lockers, the patient voice of a teacher is heard. We owe them a lot--these potters who have firmly molded our lives -- each in a widely different manner. Autumn cold nips at noses as the football team is loudly cheered to victory. Then basketball, with the smell of tasty popcorn and our annual rival, Stonewall. Yet, most clearly, we remember friends -- gay ones, serious ones, our pals and our competitors. Never will it be the same. These, and much more, were the special flavors that beg for fond remembrance; and though thoughts of past days will grow dim, Memories are made of this. Mrs. Bowers is secretly admired by her business education students because she teaches the ageless act of striving for perfection. Yet, constantly, she is watchful for new ideas and modern methods of teaching. In eleven years at Nitro, Mrs. Bowers has been more than a teacher. The F. B. L. A. and F. T. A., under her guidance, have grown rapidly and have gained statewide re- cognition for Nitro High. As Mrs. Bowers has a teen-age daughter, she knows the problems of young people and has served excellently this year as counselor. So, Mrs. Bowers, we dedicate to you our 1959 Wildcat. 4 PRINCIPAL NITRD HIGH SCHOOL John F. Santrock, Principal Nitro, West Virginia December 17, 1958 St ant rock Memories, just the thought, makes one sit back, relax and dream a while. We, like our forefathers, still keep time by the crowning events in our lives. It will always be easy to remember '59, for was it not the year of the first undefeated football team in Wildcat history? Can you forget how proud we were to be chosen for the Lions Convention parade in Chicago? How we had carnivals, sold ads, bought candy, haunted the businesses for donations toward new band uniforms and then finally came the showing at the Poca game. Were we not in the first high school basketball game against Stonewaxl in the Civic Center? Yes, and most important came honors from National Scholastic contests. National Merit winners, essay winners, and many more scholarships and contests not yet reported. We were thrilled with our radio programs emulating from WKLC in St. Albans every Saturday. Although these were only a few of many events, I am sure those listed above will always make your hearts swell with pride and fill your memory cup to overflowing. You have given much to your school and community. What you can give is more important to you in the long run than that which you can get. May these successes not only be memories in each of your lives but may they be steps to a successful and happy life. THE DEANS Mr. W. C. Noyes M. A. Marshall Dean of Boys Mrs. Vivan Martin B. S. The custodians and cooks are responsible for these two very important factors in our daily life. DEPARTMENTS SCIENCE ENGLISH In this era of man-made satel- lites and artificial planets, science is of ever-increasing importance. Everyone, not only atomic en- gineers, can apply the principles of general science, biology, chemistry, and physics to his life. English is the national language of the United States. By learning to write and speak correct English, we are able to com- municate with others. SOCIAL STUDIES Pictured at the right is a class in problems of our democracy. This is just a small part of the social studies program at Nitro High School. BUSINESS EDUCATION One of the largest occupational fields in America today is open to the clerical student. A person skilled in typing, short- hand, and bookkeeping can rest as- sured that there is always a position open for him in the business world. i MATHEMATICS Nitro High School is very proud of its math department, which is one of the best in West Virginia. Nearly everyone uses some form of mathematics every day. Everyone faces problems in arithmetic and NH S offers them the material with which to solve them. REMEDIAL READING Reading is the basis for all other school work. This is an integral part of the life of every student. Realizing the importance of read- ing, Nitro High has added a special remedial reading class to instill in the students a desire to read for knowledge and the special enjoyment that only a book can give. MUSIC Music appreciation is necessary for a well-rounded person. In music class, some students discover hidden talents and decide on a musical career. To most of us, how- ever, music is a means by which we can enjoy ourselves. ART Beauty is added to our lives by the appreciation of art. At Nitro, art students learn neat- ness, art coordination, landscaping, architecture, and the history of art and artists. ■ LANGUAGES Both Latin and Spanish are offer- ed at Nitro to help round out the stud- ents' education. The study of foreign languages not only teaches us about other lands and people, but also helps in the study of English. INDUSTRIAL ARTS Never to be forgotten by most boys are the hours spent in industrial arts classes at NHS. Here they learn skills which will be invaluable to them-- for handy- man” jobs, in hobbies, and, for many, in their occupations. HOME ECONOMICS We will never forget our first adventures in sewing under the com- petent guidance of Mrs. Bockway. In sewing, the girls of Nitro learn to select patterns and materials best suited to them. They learn to apply this knowledge by making clothes for themselves. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Both boys and girls alike will cherish memories of physical educa - tion classes. Realizing that physical welfare is as important as intellectual growth, Nitro High School has set up a pro- gram which helps keep the student physically fit as well as encouraging fair play, sportsmanship, and charac- ter development. VALEDICTORIAN Jackie Reed SALUTATORI AN Toni Smith CLASS HISTORY OF 1959 It is clearing now—the mist—that murky cloud that haunts us. Four years of struggle, excitement, and sometimes misunderstanding have brought us to where we are. That eternal mist is dropping memories too; memories of things we can never experience again and memories of things bound to shape our destiny. With anxiety and restlessness we plunged into our fresh- man year, to be quieted somewhat by algebra, civics, and Latin. Some tried out for band and various sports, while others were elected to the Student Council. To lead us through that uncertain first year of high school we chose Virginia Agee to execute the duties of President. Londa Jividen was Vice-President and Jack Sturgeon, Secretary- Treasurer. We were pretty sure of ourselves that second year of our high school days, and showed it as we confidently waded into the theory of geometry, collections of biology, and the con- tinued study of history and English. To carry the light forus down the sophomore path we selected Frank Grover as our President, Larry Wilson, Vice-President, and Linda Robey, Secretary-Treasurer. As the crucial third lap of our journey began, we became more critical of the things about us and participated in more than ever before. Our minds produced a newspaper, probed the mysteries of chemistry, and challenged the fundamentals of higher math. Proudly we ordered our class rings and even more excitedly awaited their arrival as the Junior-Senior Prom drew close. With ’’Sayonara” as the theme of our Prom, we neared the end of our year as ’’jolly juniors.” To lead us that year we elected Clayton Allison, President, Joyce Jarrett, Vice-President, and Jeanette McGinn, Secretary-Treasurer. Now we are seniors, incredible as it seems to us, for all those yesterdays have passed so swiftly. With Jerry Flowers as President, Steve Lambert, Vice-President, and Jackie Reed,Secretary-Treasurer, we have ordered our caps, gowns, announcements, and cards. Shining brightly in the mist before us are college gates, new jobs, and a completely different life. We wish to hesitate to get our balance, but we dare not, for we are afraid the fast-running sands of time will leave us behind. 24 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS President..................................Jerry Flowers Vice President . ........................Steve Lambert Secretary....................................Jackie Reed 25 CHARLE STEVEN ADAMS Jasons 1; Bible 2; Football 1. The Cats” were feeling their punch that night. Although Elkview played a fine game, it wasn't good enough, for in the end the score card showed a 33-0 tussle in favor of Nitro. Eight days later the Wildcats met the Red Dragons of St. Albans at Underwood Field. Our close rivals were out to beat us. Four quarters of hard play brought a 7-7 match. Next the Wildcats went to South Charleston for a game, which was a deciding factor in whether or not we would play Gary. It was a difficult game, with three Nitro players being injured. Due to teamwork and Coach Stover's fine mentoring, the game ended 14-6 in favor of the Wildcats. On the following Saturday the Dupont Panthers came to Underwood Field, bent on destruction of the Nitro record. A wet field, due to early morning rain, had completely dried out by game time. However, Dupont’s spirit was soon drowned in tears as the Wildcats racked another 33-0 score. The next Friday night, as the Wildcats visited Dunbar, the Nitro jubilance was punctured by a good scare. Behind 7-6, and four minutes of play remaining saw the ever-powerful Cats” retaliate as Glen Carpenter ran an eighty-two-yard touchdown. After this thrilling win Nitro spirit perked up, with half the season left to play. October 11, the Sissonville Indians traveled to Under- wood Field. The high-riding Wildcats tilted this Class AA team 33-7. The Indians, best in their class, scored in the last minutes of the ball game. For the next game the Wildcats visited the nest of the Clendenin Cardinals. With Reveal high scorer, Nitro swamp- ed the Cards. In the end the scoreboard showed a lop- sided 54-0. On a very cold October 31, Nitro journeyed to the field of the Hurricane Redskins. As the spectators shivered in the bleachers, the Wildcats turned the Redskins under for a 39-0 win. — I V In our Homecoming Game with Poca, Miss Jackie Reed was crowned Miss Wildcat, being attendedbyJoyce Jarrett and Jenny Agee. The elaborate program was punctuated by three beautiful floats. The Wildcats were slow warming up, but the end showed a 39-13 win being accredited to Coach Stover's Cats.” Our final game took place when the Gary Coaldiggers came to Nitro. The cocky, reputedly tough coaldiggers bit the dusi as the Wildcats finished with a 39-6 victory. This game brought the end of the season, the first undefeated one in Wildcat history.
