NITRD HIGH SCHOOL John f. Santrock, Principal Nitro. West Virginia October 31, 1957 To the Class of 1958 It is a tremendous thrill to have the opportunity of writing in your annual. It is not only a thrill but it carries with it certain serious responsibilities. In just a few words, one should at least try to say something of lasting value to the members of this graduating class - some constructive word of counsel and advice which will be of assistance to you in the future. The majority of your class entered the first grade back in the fall of 1946. Your entrance in school was also my first year in school - as a teacher. There have been tremendous changes here and elsewhere; a new school, new teachers, new administration, new classmates, modern cars, jet planes, television, atomic power, automatic devices for the house, modern hospitals, modern churches - and, now, sputnik. Yes, all of these changes have helped to make your years in school the best years of your life. A changing world means a world full of challenging opportunities for anyone who has the spirit and talent not only to accept them, but to benefit by them. You are undoubtedly entering the most hazardous and yet most promising period in our history. Basically there are two ways of preparing for these great challenges and these great opportunities - education and experience. More and more one needs a college edu- cation to succeed and certainly there really is no substitute for experience. In one way or another one must learn the rules of adjustment and adaptation which goes with a well- trained life. With confidence in your own abilities and faith in the wisdom of the goal you have set in life, you will be able to adjust, adapt and succeed. Yes, these have been the best years of your life, to hold and to cherish as your own. Look into the past with pride but so conduct yourselves in the future that you, your family and your friends will always be proud of you, and may you always be worthy of those riches which God has so bounti- fully bestowed upon you. Sincerely, JFS ess b
