YEAH OF OUR LIVES” THE 1958 WILDCAT PRESENTED BY THE STUDENTS OF NITRO HIGH SCHOOL Co-Editors Judy Welton Patty Phelps TABLE OF CONTENTS ADMINISTRATION SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN CLUBS AND FEATURES ATHLETICS ADVERTISING WILDCAT STAFF CO-EDITORS Judy Welton Patty Phelps BUSINESS MANAGERS.....................................................Britta Been Connie McGill Alma Mandeville FEATURES............................................................Helen McGrew Carol Breedlove SPORTS EDITORS............... .......................................... John Smith James Allison SPONSORS . . . . Mrs. Hallie Grose Miss Pauline Richardson 3 DEDICATION MISS PAULINE RICHARDSON In September, 1930, Miss Richardson, a Marshall College graduate from Huntington, West Virginia, joined the nine other teachers to complete the staff at Nitro High School. The enroll- ment consisted of 103 boys and 126 girls. That year our honored teacher was required to teach eighth-grade math, ninth-grade English, seventh-grade general science, and be in the Library for one class period. In these early years, Miss Richardson quickly gained the respect of parents, pupils, fellow teachers, and the administration. She has long been recognized as a strong disciplinarian and one who required that each student measure up to a certain standard and also to his individual capacity. Miss Richardson has served the students in many extra-curricular activities, and was one of the first sponsors of the Student Council. It has been mainly through her efforts as business sponsor of the Wildcat that our annual has been maintained probably at the lowest cost of any annual in Kanawha County. Miss Richardson has aided much inhelping to make the students' tenure in Nitro High School truly the best years of their lives. May this dedication express in a small way our appreciation. 4 NITRD HIGH SCHOOL John f. Santrock, Principal Nitro. West Virginia October 31, 1957 To the Class of 1958 It is a tremendous thrill to have the opportunity of writing in your annual. It is not only a thrill but it carries with it certain serious responsibilities. In just a few words, one should at least try to say something of lasting value to the members of this graduating class - some constructive word of counsel and advice which will be of assistance to you in the future. The majority of your class entered the first grade back in the fall of 1946. Your entrance in school was also my first year in school - as a teacher. There have been tremendous changes here and elsewhere; a new school, new teachers, new administration, new classmates, modern cars, jet planes, television, atomic power, automatic devices for the house, modern hospitals, modern churches - and, now, sputnik. Yes, all of these changes have helped to make your years in school the best years of your life. A changing world means a world full of challenging opportunities for anyone who has the spirit and talent not only to accept them, but to benefit by them. You are undoubtedly entering the most hazardous and yet most promising period in our history. Basically there are two ways of preparing for these great challenges and these great opportunities - education and experience. More and more one needs a college edu- cation to succeed and certainly there really is no substitute for experience. In one way or another one must learn the rules of adjustment and adaptation which goes with a well- trained life. With confidence in your own abilities and faith in the wisdom of the goal you have set in life, you will be able to adjust, adapt and succeed. Yes, these have been the best years of your life, to hold and to cherish as your own. Look into the past with pride but so conduct yourselves in the future that you, your family and your friends will always be proud of you, and may you always be worthy of those riches which God has so bounti- fully bestowed upon you. BRENDA HARRISON - Snow Queen 195 7-58 PATTY PHELPS VALEDICTORIAN CHARLES SMITH SALUT ATORIAN CLASS HISTORY Time is a strange element. Four years have fled with the swiftness of an eagle; and sudden- ly, freshmen of 1955 discover that they are seniors of 1958. Our leaders for the first lap of our sojourn were James Brothers, president, James Allison, Vice-president, and Charles Howard Smith, Secretary-treasurer. Collections seemed to be the trend during the sophomore year. To guide us through a maze of wild flowers, insects, history maps, and geometry, we selected Joe Simpson, president,James Allison, vice-president, and Judy Osborne, secretary-treasurer. Perhaps the most vivid phase of our high school days was the year we became jolly juniors. Class rings brought ohs and ahs of delight that still resound in our memories. It seems like only yesterday that we were planning a Junior-Senior Prom with a lovely marine theme. Some of us lent a hand to Journalism, while others mixed strange concoctions in Chemistry. James Allison, Danny Walker, and Judy Osborne executed the duties of president, vice-president, and secre- tary-treasurer, respectively. Now, as seniors , we have ordered announcements , cards, caps, and gowns. Our senior class officers are Jerry White, president, Gary Franklin Fisher, vice-president, and Judy Osborne, secretary-treasurer. Our four-year journey is almost over, and in a few days these best years will become a foundation for a new life. As we receive diplomas and go our separate ways, may we remember the good times we had together, and the spirit of the Black and Red. 32 Judith Britton THE JUNIORS Don Angel Rebecca Asbury Steve Adams L. Burdette, and his wife, Mary. ATHLETE OF THE YEAR, LOU BURDETTE Bear down in anything you attempt to do , was the advice Lou Burdette gave to the seniors of Nitro High School. An alumnus of 1944, Lou was a former classmate of Mr. Mehrel Shank, who is a member of our faculty. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Selva Burdette, live in Nitro, while Lou resides in Sarasota, Florida with his wife, Mary, and their three children. Lou's magnificent 5 to 0 victory over the Yankees in the final game gave the thirty-three year old righthander a place in World Series history as the fourth pitcher to win three times in a seven-game classic, and the third to achieve the feat with three straight games. For your achievement, Lou, we honor you as our Athlete of the Year , and extend congrat- ulations from the old alma mater . 58 odar. nada n nd l u loo with fiml r ‘ ' c.V!.r TM «fi« in Y nk S’ di r todov. ROBERT PAUL BURKE 60 Gigantic personality teamed with versatility all wrapped in a neat package well describes the 1958 choice for Teacher of the Year , Mr. Robert P. Burke. Mr. Burke was born in Elkins, West Virginia, where he attended Elkins High School. His B. A. and M. S. degrees were obtained from West Virginia University. Serving as principal, his teaching career began at Heizer Elementary School. After a short time had elapsed, Mr. Burke found himself in the role of a general science teacher at George Washington Junior High School. The ensuing year marked his union with the staff at Nitro High School. Biology, geography, general business, and social relations comprise his classes. He is the sponsor of the Bible Club and acts as a counselor to pupils. Power of elucidation and an air of disarming simplicity en- able him to stimulate lethargic minds. Contemplation of further schooling,'the head of a family of five, a successful teacher, a sideline business of insurance, and a verve for hunting and fishing sum up the reasons for twink- ling blue eyes and a quick smile. The underdog Wildcats battled the Elk Herd to a 0-0 deadlock. On Monday, September 16, the Wildcats journeyed to St. Albans to meet the Red Dragons on their field. After a duel in the rain and mud the game ended in a 7-7 draw. The Wildcats broke into the winning column by scoring a brilliant victory of 25-0 over the Black Eagles from South Charleston on September 21. The Cats racked up their second straight victory by downing the DuPont Panthers by a twenty point margin on their own field. The final score, 32-12. On Saturday, October 5, Nitro was host to Dunbar. The Wildcats suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of the Bulldogs. The final score was a heartbreaking 7-12. The Wildcats trekked to Sissonville onSaturday, October 12. An aerial attack by the Indians snowed the Wildcats under with a disappointing 19-47 defeat. Nitro's homecoming game was with Clendeninon Saturday, October 26. The crowd was duly rewarded when our boys trounced the Cardinals 47-0. The Wildcats scored their third shut-out of the season on November 2, by mauling the Hurri- cane Redskins 33-0. The Wildcats traveled to Poca to match wits with our arch-rival, the PocaDots, on the cold Friday evening of November 8. After a grueling gridiron battle, the Dots were able to edge us out 19-20. After the game had been postponed nearly a month, the Wildcats ended the current season correctly by romping Pt. Pleasant, who was host, by the tremendous score of 40-0 on November 15. 86 1957 FOOTBALL SCHEDULE We They Elkview ... 0 0 St. Albans ... 7 7 South Charleston . . . . . 25 0 DuPont . . 32 12 Dunbar ... 7 12 Sissonville . . 19 47 Clendenin . . 47 0 Hurricane . . 33 0 Poca . . 19 20 Pt.
