I I Stayte Ay soon upon the stage of life, Sweet, happy children, you will rise, To mingle in its care and strife, Or early find the peaceful skies. Then be it yours, while you pursue The golden moments, quick to haste Some noble work of love to do, Nor suffer one bright hour to waste. BARGER We, the seniors of Nitro High, affectionately dedicate our annual, “The Wild- cat” to Mr. Joseph Barger in appreciation of all the many worthwhile contributions he has made both to the school and the student body. Chief among these have been the many skills imparted to his students. Skills that have enriched the lives of his students and served some as a basis for employment. When Mr. Barger came to Nitro about twenty-one years ago the only thing offered in the Industrial Arts Department was Woodworking. Mr. Barger gradually built it up into a General Shop, consisting of Foundry, Sheetmetal, Forging, Pottery, Printing and Drawing. His schedule was so filled at one time he taught mechanical drawing during his lunch hour. Evidence of his handiwork could be seen throughout the old school building. He saved the school a considerable amount of money over a long period by doing the school printing. A source of pride to all the school is the beautiful trophy displayed in the main hall. Mr. Barger has made many tangible contributions to our school, hut what we'll remember most vividly will be his hearty laugh and his ability to tell a gcxxl story. No bubble is so iridescent or floats longer than that blown by the teacher. The basis for our smooth running school pro- gram includes many hours of careful and strategic planning by our principal. He finds time, however, to keep his door open to stu- dents who seek advice and need help with their personal problems. SECRETARY 1VA MOODY 6 Dean of Girls VIVIAN T. MARTIN B.S. W. Va. As the class of 1956 enters the auditorium of Nitro High School, finally completed in 1962, the production to be presented “Much Ado About Nothing,” has just begun. There are people and teachers running all over the place. Yes, the curtain is just now being drawn. We find some of the more talented actors and actresses of our class taking their places on the stage. JUDY HARRIS portrays Beatrice, an excellent sweet lady, who is in love with Benedict, our own DAVID FULTZ. Benedict does not believe Beatrice loves him hut all ends well for them. Leonato, governor of Messina, is portrayed by JERRY CARROLL. With the assistance of Lconata, Claudio, JERRY WITHROW, wins the heart of Lconata's daughter, Hero acted by PATTY MARTIN. Looking through the audience we see several of our former classmates. Why there’s JIM and DOLORES (CRESCE) LOFTIS coming in the door now. And what’s this we see with them—three sets of triplets. Goodness me! BARBARA CASTO is engaged to RAY JEFFERS. He is a professional football tackle for the Chicago Bears. Barbara is Nitro’s City recorder for Mayor ELMER NULL. SHIRLEY CALDWELL is under lock and key. The State Road Commission got after her for wearing out the pavement between here and Dunbar. RUTH ANN COCHRAN and RUTH KING always were good friends. Recently they opened Ruth’s Dairy Bar in California. MITZIE HOKE and ANN HEMMINGS became producers of “This Is Your Life” in which they just had DIANA WILSON, a famous dancing star on their program. LARRY STEPHENS became a jet pilot. He was always up in the air about something anyway. He invented a new type jet but is waiting for the law of gravitation to be repealed before using it. CHARLES BURFORD won fame for the remarkable jobs he pulled although he was always looking down in the mouth. Incidentally, Charles was a dentist. BUD STONE and JIMMY HIGGINBOTHAM, noted athletes, were carrying the ball for Penn State and now are carrying the ball (and chain) for the State Pen. BILL FINK and JOHN LILLY just finished at West Point where they received their “Bachelor” degree. On the other hand KATIE DENT and MARGARET LOOKADO received MRS degrees at Southern Cal. BILLY ASBURY is now an executive at the Monsanto Chemical Company and recently raised the pay of lab boys. Wonder why? ? ? Every Sunday evening we can tune in and see The PATSY KERSEY Show. Patsy recently replaced Loretta Young. SANDRA DICKEY always had such a pretty smile that after appearing as a scout for a singing stars LEILA MILLER, MYRNA LETT, and JUDY GRALEY, better known as the “Three Spades,” on Arthur Godfrey, was immediately grabbed as a model for “Ipana.” KENNETH SUMMERS recently starred in a Broadway hit “Ladies Prefer Red Heads.” DON CASDORPH now owns an exclusive women’s dress shop in Paris. KAY BLANK- ENSHIP models “bickincs” and RACHEL JONES mink stoles. For the past month, noted AIDRUS HAYNES, has had a new style on display in “Casdorph’s.” A. C. CHAPMAN used to sing in New Mexico until one night he sang “South of the Border” and his audience decided that was where he belonged and that is where he is now singing over station PHEW—owned and operated by BUFORD JIVIDEN and BYRON PARSONS. MARIE DODRILL, one of the prettier girls in our class, captured the heart of a coffee plantation owner. Mrs. Dodrill was really relieved because of the cut in her coffee bill. Marie’s song is “40 Cups of Coffee.” MAMIE BIAS recently decided to try swimming the English Channel. She made a new record—taking the longest time ever to swim the channel. STEVE WEST, the really smart boy, by that we mean taking classes with all girls, is now' world champion typist! He only makes 300 w'ords a minute. DEANNA BRUMBAUGH’S main w'ish finally came true. She married her fiance, Gerl Nealy, from Pennsylvania. DICK ZERBE always u'as w-arm-natured. He is now employed by the government for experimental u'ork in Alaska. I Ie doesn’t bother with coats. Says he, “They are just a nuisance.” NELDA MATTOX’S wish to become a court reporter came true. She and Bobby have raised their own jury. JANE O’DELL finally hooked that famous tennis star, DON FOWLER. 31 DANNY LEWIS and ROBERT COOK arc now tall men in Barnum and Bailey’s Circus. You see, they took “Grow Taller Quick Pills’’ invented by DR. JACK WORSTELL, that noted scientist. On the other hand, VIRGINIA “TINY” DONAHUE tried these pills, which only made her shrink an inch. Remember SAMMY STONE and his saxophone in band? He really went places playing that song, “When the Cats Go Marching Round.” SHARON HARTIGAN and WILMA MORGAN got the titles for their newspaper column from their hairdoes, The Long and Short of It.” DONALD KARNES has settled down here in Nitro. He is co-owner of the Stanley Gulf Station with his father-in-law. NANCY and KEITH WORKMAN now live in a house without any windows. NANCY always had such a time keeping them closed in D. O. Class. MILDRED PARSONS and MARY MONTGOMERY went on to college and became music teachers. They are teaching currently in France as foreign exchange teachers. DALE and STANLEY HARRIS have just arrived for the reunion. They recently estab- lished the Harris Brewery in Milwaukee, and arc multi-millionaires. The fondest dreams came true for MARY ANN DEMOSS. She is now a housewife for “Toe” and has several little “Tootsies”. BETTY HANNA always drove her father’s pretty car all over creation. She finally got one of her own in 1960. It was only a Model-T. But she has made progress since then. She now drives a Lincoln. (Her own, too.) CHARLES STANLEY YOUNG finally got Anita Johnson out of high school and they are living in Bermuda keeping care of their “Younguns”. BARBARA WANDLING is the editor of a new women’s magazine, “Be Alert” by “Girt”. She made such a showing as co-editor of “The Wildcat for ’56” that her friends urged her to continue her journalistic career. JIM CONAWAY and TOMMY DORSEY worked at American Viscose Corp. during their junior and senior years of high school. Recently they built a Rayon plant in Hawaii. BRIDGET DUNN and BONNIE DONNEGON recently became lady ambassadors to Australia. WCHS still has its program “Rehearsin’ with McPherson.” The new disc jockeys on this program are Ronald and Everett. Ronald tells jokes, while Everett keeps everyone informed on the latest basketball games. LOIS MANDEVILLE really made a hit at college. She was voted the most popular girl on the campus at Southern Cal. NEIL ADAMS always was such a swell person that it is no wonder he became a missionary to China. BOUNITA KILGORE is now a famous nurse in New York City. LORRAINE MARTIN and Bonnie started out in nursing together but Lorraine got side-tracked into being a dress designer. JAMES WRIGHT is now the owner of a big nitc club in Reno. The name of it—“The '56'.” Alongside “The ‘56’ ” we find the “Tall Tale’s Club” opened by CHARLES PERSINGER. VIVIAN GROVE has really gone places working for the General Mills Company. In 1962, she was voted “Miss Homemaker” and since has become an assistant to Betty Crocker. And by the way we forgot to tell you that she is married to a heavyweight boxer. We find DOUG PAXTON the president of a large chain of department stores. The Reed Department Stores in Jackson, Mississippi. NORVAL MORTON owns and operates a diaper factory. BILL CARNEY was always wanting a raise when he worked on D.O. He is his own boss; he runs Evans Hardware. The Curl Shop, Nitro’s exclusive beauty shop is owned and operated by those neat gals SUE QUINN and DONNA MAGAW. CLYDE ADKINS now runs “Adkins Yummy Yum Tea Cafe” formerly Monroe’s Coffee Shoppe. Under a baker’s hat we find GENE DAVIDSON. Of course, Gene has put on a few pounds since he became general manager of the “The Fluff Cream Puff Shoppe.” BETTY COOKE always had such a pretty complexion and since graduation has been advertising for Lux. KENNETH INGRAM and NORMAN RYAN practically live in the woods. No, they are not hermits. They help protect our country’s natural resources. They arc forest rangers. NINA WHITED'S wish finally came true. She always wanted to go to Canada, so the F.B.I. sent her there. DR. WILLIAM KINDER runs a rocket ship between here and the moon for newly weds. The Metropolitan Opera House immediately grabbed LILA HAYES who just recently made a hit as the vocalist in the Opera “West of Virginia.” CECIL SPENCE always had such a noted “laugh” that he has now joined the “Franken- stein” cast as sound effects man. 32 Ye fellow classmates, Bear in mind Your labor is for future hours. They recently won the title “The Jitterbugs for 1965”. MARIE CLINE, BELINDA HENLEY, and PHYLLIS GODBEY made theix careers in the Navy. They each married an admiral. SONNY COULTER and TOM MARTIN really manage to keep busy now-a-day. They run a beauty salon on Fifth Avenue and a beer saloon on Third Avenue. FRANCES “Frosty” SAYRE enjoyed sleigh riding so much that she moved to Iceland where she can sleigh ride the year round. JERRY ANN II I1‘ is librarian of the New York Public Library. CAROL MILAM is her assistant. President EDDIE GREEN recently appointed DAVID GIBSON chairman of Citizenship in the United States Government. MIKE SMITH is now the manager of “Mike’s Tear ’em Down and Fix ’em Up Shop” for old Jalopies. Some of the grads settled down in Nitro. DOLORES HARRIS and LORETTA GIBSON arc school teachers here at Nitro High School. Dolores is in charge of the enlarged art depart- ment while Loretta heads the girls’ athletic department. Both teachers say they haven’t had a moment’s peace since BERNARD VERSANSKY became school principal. Since they were usually late for school, JOYCE ARTHUR and JANET BOGGESS married Deans. They were so used to seeing one every morning that they wanted one for their own. Another sign alongside Lew Burdettes, as you enter the growing town of Nitro, is the famous all-American TOM CASTO’S. PEGGY SIZEMORE is the society chairman of the newest Nitro Women’s Club, “Town and Country’.” NANCY WARNER and PATTY SMITH always liked St. Albans so well that they moved there in order to save on the gas bill. BILL STEWART, HAROLD SAUNDERS, and CHARLES 11ARBERT arc state police- men. Buddy, you better watch out for them, cause you know why . . . JERRY LEWIS is employed by Big Top Circus. The setting for his job is Clown’s Comer. The final moments of the play arc nearing; the audience becomes quiet as EDDIE GREENE, president of the United States of America, walks on the stage to present the oscar. Suddenly there is a burst of cheer and then another moment of silence as everyone sinks into thoughts of class reunion and its memories. o V cm - Jeacfiituf SleHaannet Mike Foley, Bob Westfall, and Bessie Hiniehs Minnie Brewer and Ima Anderson W Sharon Shaffer Rosalyn Ryan 58 Phyllis McLaughlin Gamewu , President Eddie Green Vice-President Jimmy Higginbotham Secretary Bridget Dunn T reasurcr Howard McKee Student First Row, Left to Right: Kenneth Ingram, Bridget Dunn, Jimmy Higgin- botham, Eddie Grcnc, Howard McKee, Jim Conaway, Barb Biggs, Bill Hall, Jack McClanahan, Jenny Agee, Kay Grove, Wayne Mandeville. 60 CLASS PRESIDENTS Senior Kenneth Ingram junior Danny Archer Sophomore Joe Simpson Freshman Ginny Agee Eighth Jack McClanahan Seventh Bill Hall Council Second Row: Larry Selby, Jerry Phelps, Mary Lois Angel), Larry Diehl, Danny Archer, Joe Simpson, Tom Casto, Jack Worstell, Harry Myers, Jaci Harless, Sharon Willard, Della Harris, Ronald Turley, Lance White, Jerry Flowers, Larry Carson, John Woods, Wilbur Winters, Kay Sayre, Nancy Young, Janet Angell, Doris Dye, Wanda Wandling.
