3-2 FOOTBALL First Row: Manager Estep, Rutherford, Hill, Loring, Higginbotham, Quinn, Comstook, Lamb, Edwards, Hedrick, Jones, Coaoh Huff; Second Row: Sharp, Priddy, Allen, Briok, Raynes, Krants, West, Ransom, Davis, Esoue; Third Row: Crewdson, Reynolds, Hull, Taylor, Raynes, Westfall, Pryor, Powell, West, Collins; Fourth Row: Anderson, Curfman, Tincher, Buckalew McKee, Turley, Lawson, Hill Carrier, Lemon, The prospects of the 44 football team were none too bright this season as most of the boys of the winning team of 43 were In the armed forces. Edwards, Comstock, Bob Raynes, and Brooks Raynes were at guards; Jack Hill, Rutherford, and Jones at tackles; and Sharp, Lamb, Collins, and West at ends. The back were Higginbotham, Crewdson, Davis, and the hard- charging twins-Escue and Hedrick, and a half-back who is one of the best ever to go through Nitro High School, Gene Loring. The Wildcats were held almost scoreless the entire season. On Sept. 15, the Wildcats journeyed to Poca to play a 6-6 tie before a large crowd. Because of the wonderful open-field running of Loring, the Cats” registered 8 first downs to Poca's 5. The first half ended on Nitro's one yard line where the Wildcats had already held for three downs. In the second half, a blocked kick put Poca in position to score, and they did. In the fourth quarter, the Cats drove from their own 20 down to the Dot’s 12 where a pass from Loring to Higginbotham tied the score. The boys from St. Albans came over on Sept. 23. Everyone was amazed the first few minutes as Coach Huff's Cats drove the much heavier Red Dragons down to the eight yard line just inches of a first down. The Wild- cats line held like steel all afternoon and the Dragons used long, sweeping end runs and a tricky pass play to outgain the Cats 12 first downs to 6 and a final score of 26 to 0. My hats off to Jack Hill, Carl Hedrick, David Comstock,and Ralph Edwards. They weren't the line they were the wall. On the muddy afternoon of Sept. 30, the Wildcats went to Madison to play Scott High School. The picture blackened for the Wildcats as Davis fumbled the first play of the game. Seven points for the Skyhawks resulted on a 25 yard run by Jones. Until the half, it was Scott all the way. They scored on 20, 45, and 25 yards by Shaffer and Coda.
