ALHA HAT€R 3 HISTORV Of NITRO HIGH The history oi' Nitro High School is different in many ways from the history of other schools. It was built by the United States government during the First World War. The architectural design of the school is typical handiwork of the town of Nitro. As most other buildings in Nitro, all the school is built on one floor. There are three large central halls, originally recreation and assembly halls, which are separated by large fire doors and a few stairs. The citizens of Nitro built a large gymnasium-auditorium which is one of the largest in the state. In 1941 the P. T. A. and other organizations of the school had an amplifying set installed in the auditorium. There are twenty-seven class rooms, fourteen of these being used by the high school. The school also has a kitchen, a sewing room, shop for manual training, biology, chemistry, and physics laboratory, a library. Red Cross room, a principal’s office, girls’ and boys dressing rooms, and three build- ings which have been built for the 0rade school recently. Nitro High School has been owned and controlled by tliree government or- ganizations and one private corporation in the ast twenty-six years. It was owned and operated by the Federal Government until 1920, when the Charleston Industrial Corporation, a private enterprise, took it over and operated the school free of taxes. In 1923 the Nitro Industrial Corporation bought the school. It is now owned by Kanawha County. Tliree attempts were made for membership in the North Central Associ- ation, but the school was not accepted until April, 1940. Original courses taught in Nitro High School were American and world history, algebra, geometry, Latin, ilnglish, and Spanish. Now all these sub- jects, with the exception of Spanish, are taught.
