In 1974 Commander Jennings joined the staff at the Royal Australian Naval College as a Ca- det Division Officer and Instructor of Naval Science. Following this assignment, Command- er Jennings reported for duty as Operations Of- ficer aboard USS LUCE QDDG-385. Opera- tions on board USS LUCE included duty as Flagship of NATO's Standing Naval Force Atlantic. In 1980, Commander Jennings re- lieved as Engineer Officer, USS WICI-HTA QAOR-lj, deploying to both the Western Pacif- ic and Indian Ocean. 2 Following his department head assignments, Commander Jennings reported for duty as EX- ecutive Officer, USS BUTTE QAE-275. During this tour, USS BUTTE completed North Atlantic and Mediterranean deployments, and was awarded the battle efficiency E',. In 1984, Commander Jennings was assigned to the Operations Directorate of the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal for opera- tional planning of Southwest Asian contingen- cies. Concurrently, Commander Jennings ear- ned a Master's Degree in National Security Studies from Georgetown University. Com- mander Jennings is married to the former Shar- on Gallant of Berlin, New Hampshire, who is a Lieutenant Commander, Nurse Corps, aS- signed to Navy Recruiting District, New J ersey- The Jennings have a son, Robert, and reside in Old Bridge, New Jersey. LCDR Berthrong was born at the Portsmouth Naval Hospital, Portsmouth, Virginia on 30 March, 1953. His father is a retired Navy Cap- tain Csubmarine skipper during WW II, served in Destroyer Force after the Warl. He graduat- ed from Langley High School, Mclean, Virginia and in 1975, he was commissioned through the NROTC Program at Villanova University near Philadelphia, where he received a B.A. in Politi- cal Science. Immediately after commissioning and training at ASW School, Newport, R.I., LCDR Berth- rong reported aboard USS LEAHY QCG-167, where he served as ASW Officer and Gunnery Assistant from August 1975 to July 1978, ear- ning his Surface Warfare Qualification in Octo- ber 1976. From August 1978 through January 1981, LCDR Berthrong was assigned to Com- mander, Naval Military Personnel Command, Washington D.C. as a Rating Assignment Offi- cer in NMPC-406. In doing this they represented the NITRO, THE UNITED STATES NAVY, and the American people proudly. On 19 March NITRO conducted vertrep to deliver am- munition. Anchored in San Remo, Italy on 21 March and remained at anchor until 26 March. While in San Remo crewmembers toured the French and Italian Rivieras including Cannes, Nice, Monte Carlo, Mo- naco, and Menton. Conducted a conrep at 0600 on 27 March with USS FARRAGUT to Starboard and USS C F ADAMS to Port to deliver ammunition. At 1145 conducted a conrep with USNS HUMPHRIES to deliver ammunition, at 1400 conducted a conrep with USS SEL- LERS to Port to deliver ammunition, and at 1520 conducted a conrep with USS W V PRATT to Starboard to deliver ammunition. Anchored in Augusta Bay, Sicily from 28 to 31 March to conduct inport exercises with other ships of the Second Fleet anchored there. On 29 March while at anchor in Augusta Bay, Sicily, the Secretary of the Navy, the Honorable William Ball III, visited NITRO and arrived via the COMSIXTHFLEET Admiralis Barge. SECNAV was escorted by COMSIXTHFLEET and COMSERVFORSIXTHFLEET, Secre- tary Ball and escorts participated in a ceremony on the flight deck in which SECNAV awarded ESWS tEnlisted Surface Warfare Specialistl qualifications to three NITRO crewmembers and also reenlisted one of the three. SECNAV then addressed the crew and commended them for their performance in getting underway for a deployment with two weeks notice. Secretary Ball was then escorted on a tour of the ship be- fore departing via COMSIXTHFLEET's Helicopter. On 31 March NITRO was underway enroute to Toulon, France. On 1 April conducted vertrep to deliver ammunition and conrep with USS KALAMAZOO to receive fuel and deliver ammunition. On 3 April N I- TRO moored at Toulon, France, one of the major naval basesiused by the French Navy. From Toulon several members of the crew enjoyed trips to Paris and skiing in the French Alps. NITRO moored at Toulon on 20 April, and was underway again on 26 April enroute to Haifa, Israel. Other crewmem- bers visited many historic places including Jerusalem, Jericho, Masada, and Dead Sea, Nazareth, Tiberias, and the Sea of Galilee. On 23 May NI- TRO conducted a conrep with USS CONYNGHAM to deliver fuel and ammunition. NITRO anchored at Cartagena, Spain on 25 May, and was underway again on 30 May to conduct a conrep with USS SEAT- TLE to deliver ammunition and receive fuel. NITRO anchored again at Cartagena and remained at anchor until 3 June when she was under- way enroute to Calvi, Corsica. On 5 June conducted a conrep with USS KALAMAZOO to receive fuel and ammunition. NITRO anchored at Calvi, Corsica on 7 June and remained at anchor until 10 June. On 12 June NITRO conducted a blue water turnover to her relief, USS BUTTE, in which 260 lifts were delivered by conrep, 240 were delivered by vertrep, and 90 were received by vertrep. On 15 June NITRO con- ducted a conrep to receive fuel and supplies from USS KALAMAZOO. NITRO moored at Rota, Spain on 18 June and was again on 19 June, homeward bound. Walker, NITRO's B Division LCPOY' THE SECRETARY OF THE NAVY VISITS USS NITRO On March 30, 1989 the Secretary of the Navy, the Honor- able William L. Ball III, visited the USS NITRO as part of a brief tour of the ships deployed to the Sixth Fleet. Secretary Ball was accompanied by Vice Admiral J. D. Williams, COMSIXTHFLEET, and Commodore R. W. Holly, COMSERVFORSIXTHFLEET. During the visit N ITRO was at anchor in Augusta Bay, Sicily, and Secre- tary Ball arrived via the COMSIXTHFLEET Admir l' a s Barge. While on board the Secretary participated in an all-hands ceremony on the flight deck in which he award ed the Enlisted Surface Warfare Specialist QESWSD u 1: q a ification pin to three NITRO crewmembers, YN2 Mi chael B. Maiaaa, MMC Gary L. Richards, and BTC Mar-1.2 D. Walker. In addition to receiving his ESWS qualifica- tion, YN2 Melson was reenlisted for additional service to the Navy by Secretary Ball. After the awards ceremony, Secretary Ball made .3 short Speech in which he praised NITRO's crew for their dedl- cation in successfully preparing for the Mediterranean 1-89 Deployment with just two weeks notice.
