At imilz - veryda ife f t e r t h e s c r e e c h i n g brakes bring the long lean yellow machine to a halt, Nimitz students begin filing off their buses with constant chatter of the past even- ing events. Their conversation in- cludes the phone call they received from that special someone they have been expecting to hear from, homework they failed to complete, the lest later in the day they are worried about and other topics that young adults find special interest in discussing, Slowly they saunter into the cafeteria, down the 100 hall toward the Commons area to meet and greet friends with a hello. While waiting for the 7:45 bell to move them to their first class where they will begin learning the day's prepared lessons, students continue their visit with friends and fill them in on the current condition of their life. Then that unfaltering sound explodes and fills the building that directs students to their first period class. As they meander down the long corridors that familiar noise continues, feet shuffling, people talk- ing, lockers slamming - HUM! it's 8:00 - time to begin learning about how to write a composition, time to study the days of the Old West, time to dissect that frog so anxiously dreaded, time to get the body in shape. As they progress and students continue their daily ritual of changing classes and talking about things they have learned in class, rumbling sounds of hunger flow in the stomachs of learners. lt can only be time to nourish the body and take a break from the nurturing of the mind. When lunch comes to an end, students again start their routine and await that dependable tone that brings their day to an end - the 3:15 dismissal that will again put them on that bus for a long ride home. But waitl, it's not over - for some people anyway. For some Nimitz students, the day is all but over - there's practice - football, drill, band, cheerleader - time to put in those extra hours that bring them fulfillment and satisfaction. When all extra time has been completed, these special students return home to complete homework assignments they feared all day, assignments they expect to keep them up until midnight to finish. After the screeching brakes bring the long lean bus . . . time for another day at NHS.
