NIMITZ FRESHMAN 1 984 VOLLEYBALL A Teamwork Keeps Freshmen on Top Freshman Volleyball pulled out of their season with a 16-8 record. llThey worked very well as a team, continually boosting each other, each teammate concerned for the other teammates, said Coach Diane Evans. Because of their teamwork, they never gave up on any game. District presented the girls with the toughest challenge. At MacAr- thur, the team experienced its first district win, causing much excite- ment. They finished district with a 5-4 record. Coach Evans has a good outlook for next year. 'This team will be tough to beat next year. They already work together now, she said. 1. One More ace for Maria Villapondo. 2. The Freshman team watches with anticipation. 3. Sandra lohnston and Kim Eckert wait for the serve. 110 Sports With three of the eight starters out during district play, the l.V. Volleyball team suffered seven losses and picked up only two wins. Although their win record did not give them a season ranking, the girls' pride and loyalty to the team gave them a 411 slot throughout the year on the Cougar scoreboard. Coach Irene Hopkins has an optimistic outlook for their next season. UA good freshman group is coming up so we will have more numbers, said Coach Hopkins. The team picked up a new 6-O playing system this year showing improvement with each game. Coach Hopkins plans on adding it in next year's playing strategy. Sophomore Christie Dillard, MVP, aided the team with her sets and spikes at the net. With next year's in- crease in numbers and sup- port, the l.V.
