Sophomores Show Spirit Playing football is tough, with a young team. The football team got off a rough start with a lack of players. They did not, however, give up. Pride and determina- kept the Sophomore Cougars working hard during their winless year. The Sophomores fought with unbounding resolution, playing their best game against the Smiley Eagles. The Coogs held the Eagles scoreless the first three quarters, falling behind at the very end. Coach Wade felt the team ef- fort was set on improving skills and working together. M.V.P. Ronny Keener aided the Sophomores' offensive line, dedicating himself every game. MITZ - AA NHT .mirz 2' Saas . 'l. Teamwork Pays Off Finishing the season with a 7-2 record, the Iunior Varsity team played much better than the coaches originally expected. With the majority of the players being sophomores, the l.V. team played it's most outstanding season. Overal , the teamwork of this young team paid off. The l.V. team, composed of only seven juniors, many sophomores, and two freshmen, played and contributed to the season all year long, never giving up on any game. Coach Gary Dworaczyk said, 'lThey could have played better at times, but considering the team was young . . . they were an outstanding team. The l.V. team encountered some tough opponents this year, but they held their own in all but two games. They experienc- ed a turning point in the season after the Reagan and Scarborough games. l'The team realized they could score plenty of points and play good defense. This gave these young men an added boost in their remaining games. The coaches outlook for next year - 'Next year, the l.V. will again be young, composed of mostly sophomores. How hard they work during the off season will determine their outcome. 104 Sports f. L L r,i:, ff ' ' i i 'T - Mfr-'ffm'-v s,ss 1 .W aaifa ' gf, ' . i.,. Having What It Takes Setting and obtaining goals is one of life's most important facets. This year's Freshman football team not only ob- tained a goal they set for themselves, but they also set a new Nimitz record, being the only freshman team to beat Aldine's freshman. 'Beating Aldine was the high point of the season, Coach Gray said. The Freshman team worked very hard this season, showing much poten- tial. Coach Gray believes, l'With time . , . these young men will begin to work together as a team and begin to pull for each other. l think they will begin to take more pride in themselves and in the job they are doing. This team will have to carry on the tradition that this year's var- sity has started. The outstanding players for the HA and B squads were Terrence Tennard and Stanley johnson. The coaching staff is optimistic for next year. llThe potential is there if they just work hard to achieve excellence. xi 7 ,T,...t..,, 5 V -'T 5 rw, ami wmllllh - - -..s.s . .... ...t.
