gr. 20 Activities Winter Wonderland Winter brought out many new fur coats and plenty of new cowboy boots came into sight with the coming of winter. Activities changed from outdoor to indoor, clothes changed from cotton to wool and students changed from alive and festive to tired and sleepy. It was cold outside so everyone stayed inside and Nimitz became a Winter Wonderland. During December, Christmas spirit overwhelmed the school. Christmas trees were changed to include wreaths and Santa Clauses. Thanks to Cosmetology, Santa Claus and her helpers spread joy throughout the halls. Choir contributed to the airy feel- ing of the holidays by singing Christmas carols during lunches. They also performed the Messiah with other schools in our district at Aldine Senior High School. Magril Elementary students per- formed their annual Christmas show in the auditorium to further fill the halls of Nimitz with the Christmas spirit. After the holidays, fund raising activities began. Several of the money making projects included selling mugs, popcorn, and candy, as well as showing movies and giving dances during club day. Money made from these projects would go to the annual banquets tnd future activities of the clubs. A major event that plagued the national scene during 1981 was the hostage situation in Iran. The 52 hostages and their families received a belated Christmas present on January 20. After 14 months of captivity they were released from the Iranian captors. Their arrival in Washington was a time of rejoicing throughout the nation and will never be forgotten. February was the time for love and senior excitement to over- come the student body. I.C.T. sold carnations and the honor Socie- ty sold candy, gag-gifts and stuffed animals. All of the Valentine goodies were distributed to sweethearts and friends before the sixth period dance that was held in the gym.

2 We Spring Brings Rings and 'Things' As the cold chill of winter slowly faded and the sun warmed the air, Nimitz students enjoyed new activities which spring had in store. Banquets for various clubs and organizations highlighted the spring. The sports banquet took on a different look as it was held at H and H Ranch on April 28. The Juniors began to be excited about their coming year as a senior as they received their long awaited rings. They followed tradition by having friends turn their rings around their fingers. The Band and Drill Team participated in several competitions during spring. The band went to con- test in Dallas. They were proud to receive excellent and superior ratings in all events. The Drill Team went to competition at ETSU in March and returned with the top honors of all 5A schools. The sports lineup changed from basketball to baseball and track. Spring training began in May to prepare for football in the coming fall and the traditional Blue and Gold game which was held on May 23. Newly elected cheerleaders and mascots got their first taste of their new position as they, too, practiced for the coming year at this game. The Student Council sponsored the Talent Show as students displayed abilities to dance and har- monize. Sadie Hawkins Day was held in March and the zany games were sponsored by the Art department. Nimitz Seniors prepared for commencement by sending graduation invitations to friends and relatives. The Prom was held on May 2. The Senior Breakfast and Cap and Gown Day added excite- ment to their last days of school. Lastly, they sigh- ed with relief as they received their diplomas on May 30. As spring came to an end, so did another school year. Summer vacation was a time for rest for the underclassmen. For seniors, it was a time to prepare for a new and different way of life in the future. CJ ,, Liza. A ' X . rll. 1 5 5 ,- ' . 151 5 1 ,- i -rf- s , . Q X Q . T . ' 2 . gig. A if , 1 .
