Runners Stride in Style Placing respectfully high in district, the few but mighty cross- country members had every reason to be proud. The girls team placed 2nd in district and the boys placed 4th, with eight people eligible for region. The qualifiers, all girls, were Tanya DeBardelaben, seniorg Jan and Joan Dagenhardt, seniors, Jennifer Hellwig, senior, Annette Her- nandez, juniorg Leah Lucas, sophomoreg Jennifer Rucker, juniorg and Debbie Stevens, junior. With practices consisting of many grueling miles, day in and day out, the workouts were striving for consistency and improvement. Ac- cording to Coach Pete Stewart, the most consistent runners were Tanya DeBardelaben, Joan Dagenhardt, and Jennifer Rucker. Jen- nifer Hellwig and Raleigh Rodriguez were the most improved runners. Although this year was only the 2nd for the cross-country competi- tion, the runners have built quite a reputation with the future shining bright. 1'- en' ' 222 Sports

Viciorg in the asf Lane Boys Track Good showings in district were constant for the boys track teams under the coaching of Charlie Long, Terry Forga and Bill Alexander. The teams main objective was to finish better in district than the previous year and to better their own achievements. Mike Livergood worked extremely hard during the season and was rewarded with the Most Valuable Player Award. In district competition, Mozelle Darthard and Albert Myres both took 2nd place in the long jump. Third place went to Joe Rossberg in the pole-vault. Fourth place went to the sprint relay team CAlbert Myres, Mozelle Darthard, Greg Moon, and D.C. Washingtonh. Fifth place went to Royce Abdalla in the 400. Sixth place went to Greg Moon in the 200. The outstanding runners were Darthard, Myres, Moon, Abdalla, and Clarence Glenn. Nimitz finish- ed 3rd in A.I.S.D.g 4th in Baytown and 5th in district. A I was pleased with the way they competed, said Coach Long. When they 'won against stronger opponents, they won well. Girls Track Kisha Williams, Lisa Hunter, Renee Johnson, Tracy Boomer, Annette Hernandez, Rowena Buchanan, and Debbie Stevens were the most con- sistent. Lisa Hunter broke a Jetero Meet record in the Triple Jump with a 35 feet 5 inch total. The varsity finished 7th in district, while the J.V. finished in 2nd place with a total 104 points. The girls' track most outstanding district qualifiers were their relay teams. The J .V.'s 400 relay placed 2nd, 800 relay placed 3rd, and the 1600 relay plac- ed 4th. The varsity's 800 relay placed 5th. Coach Hopkins said, lf we hadn't had a lot of varisty injuries the last 3 weeks, we would have gotten farther. We just look toward next year for a better season. The M.V.P.'s were Renee Johnson and Rowena Buchanan. 224 Sports
