'A Will To Win' When practice began late in November the Freshman boys were eager to start the season. The season started with an eight game winning streak which was snapped off by the Hard Smiley Eagles team. During practice, Coach Darrel Phipps said, we worked on fundamental skills, conditioning, and stressing the point of a will to win. Tom Grant, Bobby Hammond, Andy Elmore, and Alvin Glenn were the outstanding players all season. Our record was 19-4. I believe our record could have been 20-3. I'm not saying we didn't do good. We were great. The potential is there in the freshman kids for the future teams of Nimitz to be exceptional. If they could keep the same attitude towards work and have no bad habits, they could be district champs some year, said Coach Phipps. . Gradual Improvemeni Reason for Vioiorious Season Improving throughout the year, the Girls Varsity Basketball team of 80-81 wound up with a winning 13-10 record. Boasting about his team, Coach Frank Chickowski said, The girls did as well as I ex- pected, if not betterf' Sandra Tillis paved the way for the team. The sophomore was named to the 1st string All-District, the leading scorer, the most con- sistent, and the M.V.P. on the squad, according to Coach Chickowski. Voted to the 2nd string All-District was Linda Urbanek. Dorothy Glenn was selected as Honorable Mention. The most improved player on the team was Gail Collins. The main weak point on the team was the rebounding, but was countered by the high shooting percentage. Coach Chickowski, in his second year, has noticed a gradual im- provement each year and hopes for more next year. This year we're losing six seniors, but the returning players, along with the J.V. players should produce another winning season. al The Cougar defense blocks off the Eisenhower offense. bl Coach Chickowski gives his team last minute strategy. cb San- dra Tillis hits one from long range. dl Positioning for the re- bound is Stephanie Dixon.
