Leaning Toward Perfection The J.V. squad had a lean year, ending it's season with a climatic 4-6 record. Miss Irene Hopkins, coach, said, There were no outstanding players, because everybody was having a motiva- tion problem? One highlight of the J .V. season was when the team split games with the Eisenhower Eagles, then an undefeated team. Miss Hopkins explained, The reason we split the games was because we gave them a rough time. The girls also played ex- ceptionally well against MacArthur and Aldine because they knew the other teams real well.', Practice for the season started August 18 and ended October 15. It consisted of drills, like bump- ing, spiking, and agility drills. Miss Hopkins had one last compliment for her team, I like my kids, I have a great deal of respect for them. blrr al Cindy Corliss serves the ball during a pracitice session. bl J .V. Thinking Like a Whole For the freshman volleyball team, the summer workouts ex- emplified the work that laid ahead of them. During 4th period and after school the girls worked together to make the adjustments needed to play as one unit. Under the coaching of Lavelle Hughes the girls perfected the basic skills of volleyball. They lifted weights, had jumping, rolling, and lifting drills, ran many exhausting laps and were often humiliated by the varsity team. Cindy Holder said, Despite the let downs, the freshmen have matured and hope to offer agood J.V. Humble was the hardest and most intense game. Coach Hughes replied. They gave it their all with each game going into overtime. Everyone was thinking as a whole - like a team should. al Cindy Holder goes high for a spike against the Eisenhower Eagles. bl With teammates looking on, Deanne Robuck rifles the ball toward the opposing team. cl Kneeling, Deannette Watts, Angie Arnette, Sandra Roberts, Cynthia West.
