Debaie Qualifying Arguments Sail io State The debate team has had an extremely good season in '81, with three students reaching the Texas Forensic Association State Meet. Clay Sands qualified in oratory and cross-examination debate, along with Cindy Angelcyk in oratory. Throughout the year the team placed very well at each debate. Cindy Angelcyk was named outstanding debater at the Humble tournament, Stoney Conner placed 2nd in extemp. speaking at La Porte, and Clay Sands also won 1st place in oratory at the Westchester tournament. Thanks to the help of their sponsor, Mr. Gary Boeger, and to the devoted students, '81 will be a good one to remember. Chess Chess Mates Gverpower 'Rook'ies The Chess Club is an interest group with the common hand of playing chess. This club meets every mo ing before school and on club days. Preparing for the monthly competition at the Houston Chess Assoc tion keeps the club busy and on the move. Drama Brighi Lighis, Shining Stars The familiar Lights, Cameras, Action continued throughout the year as the Nimitz Drama Department changed hands when Dixie Russell took over the depart- ment for Sylvia Ford. Tracy Peppard, Adam Cop- polo, Tim Ebert, and Jonnie Thomas started off the year really great with the production of Plaza Suite. The perfor- mance was conducted throughout the day as the students were allowed to see it during their English classes. Later in the year, student directed plays were performed during study halls. Three of the one act plays were produced by the beginning drama class and two by the advanced students. The following students also participated in U.I.L. competi- tion, Tracy Peppard, Kellie Pate, Gilbert Melott, Cecilia Bates, Kyle Ingrum, Donna Jackson, and Lynn Tarhalla. 15 Tracie Peppard shows her talent by pulling Adam Coppolo back into the room in the play, Plaza Suite. 25 With dark lights, Gilbert Melott sits upon the stage rehearsing his lines for the upcom- ing play. 35 In the play, If a Man Answers, Gilbert Melott demonstrates frustration to Donna Jackson by turn- ing his back as Toni Williams and Tim Harrison watch. 45 1981 Drama Club.
