Commanding Officer USS NIMITZ H Captain A.G. Harms, Jr. Captain Alfred G. Harms, Jr. is a native of central Illinois and graduated from the University of Illinois in 1971. He commissioned through the NROTC Program and was designated a Naval Flight Officer in May 1972. g 4 Captain Harms was first assigned to Attack Squadron ONE TWO EIGHT in Vifhidbey Island, Wa.shiington for fleet in the A-6 Intruder aircraft. He then joined Attack Squadron ONE FOUR FIVE in February 1973 and made two WestPac aboard USS RANGERCCV 615. In June 1975, he transferred to Texas ASLM University, College Station, Texas, Where he served as NROTC instructor and completed a Master of Science Degree in Statistics. In August 1978, Captain Harms reported to Attack Squadron FOUR TWO in Virginia Beach, Virgdnia for A-6 trainin . He then 'oined Attack S uadron ONE SEVEN SIX aboard USS INDEPENDENCECCV 625 and made both Mediterranean Maryland in June 198 1, he subsequently served at the Strike Aircraft Test Directorate ofthe Naval Air Test Center where he directed ordnance separation and advanced technology avionics projects. During this time, ENTERPRISE completed a change ofhomeport California to Norfolk, Virginia, and commenced a 4-year nuclear refuelinglcomplex overhaul at the Newport News Shipbuilding Drydock Company, Newport News, Virginia. Captain Harms graduated from the NATO Defense College in Rome, Italy in July 1992. He their commanded SHREVEPORTCLPD 125'from December 1992 to May 1994, and deployed to the Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean in of peacekeeping and humanitarian reliefoperations in both Bosnia!Hersegovina and Somalia. He assumed command NIMITZ KCVN 685 on 26 August, 1994. r Captain Harms has accumulated over 3,000 flight hours and flown more than 20 models of tactical military aircraft during career. His personal awards include the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal Ctwo awards5 and various other and unit commendations. He and his wife, Gina, reside in Bremerton, Washington. Captain Costello's next assignment was as a Joint Planner in the Operational Plans and Interoperability Directorate CJ-71, the Joint Staff. He returned to sea as Commanding Officer of USS ELLIOT CDD 9675 in 1992, completing a Middle EastFnree deploymen and leading the ship to consecutive Battle Efficiency awards. A follow-on sea tour as the Assistant Chiefef fer Operations, Third Fleet Staff, preceded his current assignment as Commander, Destroyer Squadron TWENTY-THREE. Captain Costel1o's personal decorations include the Joint Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious ce Medal with two gold stars, and,-the Navy Commendation Medal with a gold star. ' , .
