OI Division is synonymous with the Combat Direction Center CCDCD, the tactical cornerstone of the NIMITZ Battle Group. Com- bat is manned by personnel in the Operations Specialist COSJ rating. The mission of CDC revolves wholly around gathering, processing, evaluating, displaying and disseminating tacti- cal information to vital command and control stations throughout the entire battle group. To accomplish their mission, OI personnel are re- sponsible for operating a myriad of detection, identification, and prosecution equipment asso- ciated with the Advanced Combat Direction Sys- tem CACDSD. Combat is divided into five mod- ules, each managing a specific area of warfare, Tactical Operations Plot CTOPD, Detection and Tracking CDSLTD, Anti-Surface Warfare CASUWD, Anti-Submarine Warfare CASWD and Air War. Each of these modules is responsible to the Tac- tical Action Officer CTAOJ for creating a clear and concise tactical picture of events surrounding NIMITZ. This enables the TAO to advise the Commanding Officer ofthe current situation and make decisions on how to effectively fight and defend the battle group. In addition, CDC is tasked with conducting Radar Navigation CRADNAVJ. Personnel assigned to RADNAV stations are responsible to the Navigator for the safe navigation of NIMITZ during periods of reduced visibility, negotiating narrow channels and when entering and exiting port. It is safe to say, being what many consider the heart of the battle group, OI Division is instrumental in nearly every evolution in which NIMITZ is involved, day or night. OS1 K. Luckett OS1 B.
