grvf A UXILIARIES--. The Auxiliaries Division is led by LCDR Ocampo. The division is manned by Machinistls Mates, Enginemen, and Boiler Technicians. The Auxiliaries Cfficer is assisted by the Auxiliaries Technical Assistant, CWO3 Elliott, and the Auxiliaries Division Officers, LT Cain and ENS Fagan. Auxiliaries Division is one of the most diverse divisions on board. The responsibilities of this division range from the most technically complex in the department, such as the cryogenic plants, to the simple but operationally essential ventilation filter cleaning shop. By the end of the deployment the cryogenic plants produced and dispensed over 38,000 gallons of liquid oxygen! nitrogen and the filter shop cleaned over 7,500 filters. Auxiliaries Division directly supports N IMITZ, primary mission by providing continuous, 100 percent readiness of aircraft elevators and cata- pult steam systems. The catapult and elevator workshops work around the clock to support aircraft operations. The outlying hydraulics workshop is critical to the ship's l 1 . , , safety. This shop maintains the steering units, keeping the ship on a safe and steady course. This shop also maintains the anchor windlass, mooring capstans, replenishment Winches, and the boat and airplane crane. lf there is a special evolution in the making, you can be sure that the outlying hydraulics shop will be involved. Auxiliaries Division's busiest workshops are the air conditioning and the steam and heat shops. These shops are the most important to habitability, and their performance can significantly impact morale of the entire ship. They provide NIMITZ with all of the comforts of home. These shops maintain all hot water heaters, laundry equipment, air conditioning units, refrigeration units, and hundreds of pieces of cornrnissary equipment. The outside repair shop maintains the ship's fire pumps and 12 vertical stores conveyors which are constantly in operation, a most welcome asset to the working party who would otherwise have to strike down stores by hand. Last, but by no means less important than the other shops is the boat shop. This work center maintains all boat engines in top condition including the Admiral's Barge. Although the boats are seldom used while the ship is underway, they can always be counted on to operate in the event of a man overboard or any other emergency that requires the use of boats. LCDR R.
