.. ya.. s lL. The Aviation Fuels Division is responsible for the receipt, storage, and issue of Aviation Fuel aboard USS NIMITZ. During a six-month deployment, we will handle well over 20 million gallons of highly volatile aircraft fuel. Along with 7 8 embarked aircraft, virtually every fuel-burning piece of equipment on N IMITZ and her battle group depends on V-4's purple shirts for the delivery of Fuel The Grapes, as they are known, workin two major areas: the flight deck, with its fresh air and sunshine, and below decks, down in the bowels of the ship. The flight deck crews, known as Combat Grapes, deliver fuel directly to the aircraft and equipment through 1.73 miles of 2.5-inch hose, located at 14 flight deck and five hangar deck fueling stations. These highly trained, never tiring crews who haul hose provide an invaluable service in an extremely demanding environment. Also assigned to this branch is the very important Quality Assurance team. They are the crew who test the fuel for cleanliness, free water, flashpoint, specific gravity, and fuel icing inhibitor content. Their constant vigilance in test and evaluation is essential to providing the highest quality of clean fuel possible. aBelow Deckersf' located 10 decks below the flight deck and four decks below the water line, are tasked with the operation and maintenance of the highly complex Aviation Fuels Systems. They are assigned to receive, store, purify, and filter the fuel. Then they pump it through 6.3 miles of piping for delivery to the flight and hangar decks, With 189 tanks, 20 pumps, four purifiers, and four filters, they guarantee a ready supply of clean, clear, bright fuel 182 at all times.
