il 1 . ,1 . -fl '- ffflliiil 'i Af 1 . 1, g QED -2394 FLEET ADMIRAI. CHESTER W. NIMITZ Chester William Nimitz was born in Fredericksburg, Texas on February 24, 1885. On September 7, 1901 he was appointed to the United States Naval Academy. Following his graduation with distinction on January 30, 1905 began a career unprecedented in the records of naval history. Just after the beginning of World War Two, on December 31, 1941, Admiral Nimitz became Commander-in-Chief, U.S. Pacific Fleet. For his superior leadership and outstand- ing senfice, Admiral Nimitz was presented the Distin- guished Service lvledal, awarded in the Name of Congress, by President Harry S. Truman. After the end of World War Two, Fleet Admiral Nimitz relieved Fleet Admiral Ernest J. King as the Chief of Naval Operations at ceremonies held in the Navy Department on December 15, 1945. On December 15, 1947 Fleet Admiral Nimitz was relieved of duties as the Chief of Naval Oper- ations by Admiral Louis E. Denfield, where Fleet Admiral Nimitz retired from active duty after completing forty-two years of service to his country.
