A lrifkil ffigw I In K Ll J I, ff I 1 I f I x f.-fi 5 K Air Antisubmarine Squadron ,TWO-FOUR was originally commissioned on 1 January 1943, and now is homeported at Naval Air Station Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Florida. The Scouts of VS-24 fly the S-3A VIKING , the Navy's newest carrier-based antisubmarine aircraft. The VIKING employs sophisticated aircraft electronics and weapons systems, allowing aircrews to detect, track and destroy hostile submarines under any circumstances. During the cruise the f'Scouts routinely demonstrated the capability of the VIKING to detect and track both real world and exercise submarines. During the NATO exercise Display Determination '81, the Scouts detected all the enemy subs and launched over sixty simulated attacks in concluding one of the most successful ASW exercises in the history of the S-3. In the 36 years since the squadron was commissioned it has participated in numerous deployments on fifteen differ- ent carriers and has been awarded, among other honors, 338 the Battle Efficiency the Aviation Safety Award, the Meritorious Unit Commendation and the Arnold J. Isbell Award for Antisubmarine Warfare Excellence. Scouts who have proven themselves by becoming day and night carrier qualified have the honor of wearing one ofthe Navy's most unique patches, the Duty Cat . The patch originated in 1948 on a stormy night when a young pilot drew a lightning struck cat on the squadron blackboard. The cat stayed on the board throughout the night as the aircrews flew sortie after sortie in rough weather and all returned safely. From then on the cat was always on the board during flight operations, and it eventually became a patch, a symbol of accomplishment and unity, representative ofthe skill and teamwork required for successful night shipboard operations. Today, more than 30 years later, the Scouts proudly maintain the same tradition and professionalism in all as- pects of their mission. 1. ,g
