COMMANDER FREDERICK L. Lewis u.s. NAVY COMMANDER CARRIER AIR WING EIGHT Commander Frederick L. Lewis was born in Los Ange- qu les, California on December 15, 1940. After graduating from l the United States Naval Academy with the class of 1962, he - 1 entered Flight Training at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Flor- ida and was designated a Naval Aviator at Naval Air Station, Kingsville, Texas in November 1963. A one year tour as a Flight Instructor with Training Squad- ron TWO followed, after which he was ordered to Fighter ,- Squadron ONE TWO ONE as a Fleet Replacement Pilot. ' After completion of F-4 Pilot Training, Commander Lewis reported to Fighter Squadron SEVENTY-FOUR where he participated in the 1965-1966 Mediterranean deployment and 1967 Tonkin Gulf deployment in USS FORRESTAL CCVA 591. This deployment was abruptly terminated by a disastrous flight deck fire and Commander Lewis received - orders to Fighter Squadron THIRTY-THREE where he made a 1968 Western Pacific deployment in USS AMERICA CCVA 665. He was then selected for Naval Test Pilot School, - Patuxent River, Maryland from which he graduated in 1969. 5 . After serving two years as a Project Pilot with the Senfice 'ff' Test Division, Naval Air Test Center, Commander Lewis reported to Fighter Squadron ONE HUNDRED ONE for F-4 refresher training and subsequently reported to Fighter - Squadron FOURTEEN in July 1972. After two Mediterra- 1 nean deployments aboard USS JOHN F KENNEDY QCVA 671, Commander Lewis transitioned to the F-14A aircraft at 1 Naval Air Station, Miramar, California, while attached to l Fighter Squadron FOURTEEN, where he served as Oper- l ations Officer and Executive Officer. gl Commander Lewis then reported to Fighter squadron 1 ONE HUNDRED ONE in September 1975 and was as- signed as Officer-in-Charge of the F-14A Detachment for the establishment of the Atlantic Fleet F-14 Fleet Replace- ment Squadron. ln November 1976, he reported to Fighter Squadron ONE FORTY-TWO and served as Executive Officer until January 1978 when he assumed command of that squad- ron. After relinquishing command of Fighter Squadron ONE FORTY-TWO in March 1979, Commander Lewis reported to Commander Fighter Wing ONE where he served as the Chief of Staff. He served in this capacity until June 1980 -W' when he assumed command of Carrier Air Wing EIGHT. ln September 1981, Commander Lewis was relieved as Commander Carrier Air Wing EIGHT, and was transferred to M0 Commander Naval Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet Staff, Naval , ,ss Air Station, Norfolk, Virginia.
