AVCM KENNETH R. MANTLE MASTER CHIEF PE'r'rv ornclsn OF THE coMMANn Master Chief Kenneth R. Mantle, son of Mr. 81 Mrs. Rus- sell Mantle, was born in Springfield, Illinois on June 11, 1938. He is a graduate of Lanphier High School in Spring- field, and of Pensacola Junior College in Florida, where he earned his Associate of Arts Degree in Teachers Education in July 1972. He enlisted in the Navy in June 1956 and completed Recruit Training at Great Lakes, Illinois. After attending Aviation Fundamentals and Aviation Elec- trician's Mate A School, he was assigned to USS BON HOMME RICHARD QCVA-315. He then reported to the Fleet Air Gunnery Unit Pacific in EI Centro, California. Following assignments as a student to Aviation Electri- cian's Mate B School and Fighter Squadron ONE TWEN- TY-FOUR, Master Chief completed Western Pacific deploy- ments with Fighter Squadron TWO ONE-ONE in USS LEX- INGTON QCVA-163 and USS HANCOCK CCVA-199. He was next assigned to Airborne Antisubmarine Squad- ron FORTY-ONE for training in maintenance of the S-2 Tracker prior to a four year tour with Utility Squadron FIVE in Atsugi, Japan. After his advancement to Chief Petty Officer, he served as an instructor in Aviation Electricians Mate A School. Because of his leadership and performance, he was select- ed as an instructor for the Chief Petty Officer's Academy in Pensacola. Upon being selected for Senior Chief, he was assigned to Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron ONE for training in the H-3 Sea King. He then deployed in USS GUAM CLPH-95, USS FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT QCVA-425, USS AMERICA QCVA-665 and USS LEXINGTON QCVT-165 while assigned to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron TWO as the Detach- ment Maintenance Chief. During his fourth year in HC-2, he was advanced to Master Chief and appointed Command Master Chief. After completing a tour as an advancement examination writer at the Naval Education Training Program Development Center at Pensacola, Master Chief then reported to NIMITZ as the Departmental Leading Chief and Production Control Super- visor in the Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department. He assumed the duties as Command Master Chief on No- vember 15, 1979. Master Chief MantIe's personal decorations and awards include: one Air Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, two Navy Unit Commendations, six Good Conduct Medals, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, and various campaign and ser- vice ribbons. The Master Chief and his wife, the former Gay Logan of Springfield, Illinois maintain a home in Pensacola, Florida with their four daughters.
