CAPTAIN PAUL W. PARCELLS, U.S. NAVY EXECUTIVE OFFICER, USS NIMITZ Captain Paul Whitney Parcells was born in Chicago, Illi- nois on February 22, 1938. He is a graduate of San Rafael High School, San Rafael, California, and of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland where he was commissioned an Ensign and received a Bachelor of Science degree in June 1960. Following Flight Training in Pensacola, Florida, he was designated a Naval Aviator and reported to Air Antisubmar- ine Squadron THIRTY-EIGHT. During this tour he completed three extended deployments to the Western Pacific in USS BENNINGTON QCVS-201. ln August 1965, Captain Parcells reported to the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California where he earned his Master of Science degree in Aeronautical Engi- neering. Following training in Fighter Squadron ONE TWENTY- ONE at Naval Air Station Miramar, California, Captain Par- cells joined Fighter Squadron NlNETY-TWO where he served as Maintenance Officer. He completed his fourth and fifth extended deployments to the Western Pacific aboard USS ENTERPRISE QCVN-65j accumulating more than 150 combat missions over Southeast Asia. ln October 1970, Captain Parcells reported to the Naval Test Pilot School at Patuxent River, Maryland and graduat- ed with class LVlll in June 1971. He was then assigned as the Naval Air Test Center F-14 Program Manager. Addition- ally, he served as Project Test Pilot on the F-4J Longitudial Control Positioning Device and F-4J!AWG-10 Visual Target Acquisition Systems project. He also participated in the Accelerated Service Trials of the F-8H!J and F-4 aircraft. After refresher training in Fighter Squadron ONE HUN- DRED ONE at Naval Air Station, Oceana, Virginia, Captain Parcells reported to Fighter Squadron ONE HUNDRED TWO as Executive Officer and later served as the 18th Commanding Officer of that squadron in June 1973. Fol- lowing his tour as Commanding Officer, he was assigned the duties of Aide to the Chief of Naval Operations. ln March 1977, he was ordered to USS FORRESTAI. CCV-595 as the Navigator and then Executive Officer. Before reporting to NIMITZ as Executive Officer, Captain Parcells completed the nuclear propulsion training syllabus at Orlando, Florida, Saratoga Springs, New York, and Washington, D.C. Captain Parcells' personal decorations and awards in- clude: the Meritorious Service Medal, five Strike!Flight Air Medals, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, and various service and campaign medals. He is a member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots. Captain Parcells is married to the former Priscilla Gail Frey of Baltimore, Maryland. They have a son and a daughter. 23

AVCM KENNETH R. MANTLE MASTER CHIEF PE'r'rv ornclsn OF THE coMMANn Master Chief Kenneth R. Mantle, son of Mr. 81 Mrs. Rus- sell Mantle, was born in Springfield, Illinois on June 11, 1938. He is a graduate of Lanphier High School in Spring- field, and of Pensacola Junior College in Florida, where he earned his Associate of Arts Degree in Teachers Education in July 1972. He enlisted in the Navy in June 1956 and completed Recruit Training at Great Lakes, Illinois. After attending Aviation Fundamentals and Aviation Elec- trician's Mate A School, he was assigned to USS BON HOMME RICHARD QCVA-315. He then reported to the Fleet Air Gunnery Unit Pacific in EI Centro, California. Following assignments as a student to Aviation Electri- cian's Mate B School and Fighter Squadron ONE TWEN- TY-FOUR, Master Chief completed Western Pacific deploy- ments with Fighter Squadron TWO ONE-ONE in USS LEX- INGTON QCVA-163 and USS HANCOCK CCVA-199. He was next assigned to Airborne Antisubmarine Squad- ron FORTY-ONE for training in maintenance of the S-2 Tracker prior to a four year tour with Utility Squadron FIVE in Atsugi, Japan. After his advancement to Chief Petty Officer, he served as an instructor in Aviation Electricians Mate A School. Because of his leadership and performance, he was select- ed as an instructor for the Chief Petty Officer's Academy in Pensacola. Upon being selected for Senior Chief, he was assigned to Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron ONE for training in the H-3 Sea King. He then deployed in USS GUAM CLPH-95, USS FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT QCVA-425, USS AMERICA QCVA-665 and USS LEXINGTON QCVT-165 while assigned to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron TWO as the Detach- ment Maintenance Chief. During his fourth year in HC-2, he was advanced to Master Chief and appointed Command Master Chief. After completing a tour as an advancement examination writer at the Naval Education Training Program Development Center at Pensacola, Master Chief then reported to NIMITZ as the Departmental Leading Chief and Production Control Super- visor in the Aircraft Intermediate Maintenance Department. He assumed the duties as Command Master Chief on No- vember 15, 1979. Master Chief MantIe's personal decorations and awards include: one Air Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, two Navy Unit Commendations, six Good Conduct Medals, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, and various campaign and ser- vice ribbons. The Master Chief and his wife, the former Gay Logan of Springfield, Illinois maintain a home in Pensacola, Florida with their four daughters.
