CDR J.S. Craighill Department Head Twenty-four hours a day, in port or underway, the Reactor Department makes it all happen . With quiet precision, nuclear trained men operate and maintain the world's larg- est, most sophisticated shipboard nuclear propulsion plant. The Reactor Department is made up of some of the most intelligent, reliable, highly trained men in the Navy. Reactor Training Division is the first stop for a nuclear trained opera- tor reporting on board NIMITZ, where he completes his Basic Nuclear Engineering Qualification. Reactor Controls Division is manned by Electronics Technicians who ensure the sensors and control functions for the safe operation of the Nuclear Power Plants function dependably and accurately. Reactor Electrical Division is manned by Electrician's Mates who ensure that the power generating equipment on board is always in excellent condition. Reactor Laboratory Division is manned by Engineering Laboratory Technicians who perform the vital function of ensuring that all chemistry associated with the power plants is kept in spec . Reactor Mechanical Division is manned by the Machin- ist's Mates who maintain the mechanical and fluid systems associated with the Reactor plants. The mission - to ensure NIMITZ meets her operational commitments. The record - flawless. As a result of the corrective and preventive maintenance carefully performed by the men of Reactor Department, NIMITZ has yet to miss a commitment and is always capable of steaming at Flank Speed.
