M ' CAPTAIN RICHARD C. MACKE, U.S. NAVY EXECUTIVE OFFICER, USS NIMITZ Captain Bichard Chester Macke, son of Mr. 8 Mrs. Ches- ter Macke, was born in Freeport, Illinois on January 4, 1938. He is a graduate of Kirkland High School, Kirkland, lllinois, and of the United States Naval Academy, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in June 1960. He entered Flight Training at Pensacola, Florida in July 1960 and was designated a Naval Aviator in August 1961. Captain Macke then reported to Attack Squadron TWENTY-THREE in Lemoore, California and flew 4-A Sky- hawks for the next four years, accumulating more than 200 arrested landings on USS MIDWAY QCVA-411. Captain Macke entered the Navy Test Pilot School in February 1965 and after graduation served in the Weapons System Test Directorate. There he participated in many projects and was Project Officer for the A-4 Shoehorn and the Navy Preliminary Evaluations and Board of Inspection and Survey Trials for the A-7A aircraft. From January 1968 to January 1970, Captain Macke was attached to Attack Squadron TWENTY-SEVEN, flying the A-7A Corsair ll. He served there as the Administrative Officer and completed two combat deployments in USS CONNSTELLATION QCVA-641, flying more than 150 mis- sions over Southeast Asia. Captain Macke then reported to the U.S. Naval Postgrad- uate School in February 1970, where he graduated with distinction with a Master of Science degree in Operations Fiesearch and Systems Analysis. While at postgraduate school, he was selected for aviation squadron command. ln March 1972, he reported to Attack Squadron SIXTY-SIX in Cecil Field, Florida as Executive Officer and later serving as Commanding Officer of this A-7E squadron assigned in USS INDEPENDENCE QCVA-621. His next duty station was the Navy Office of Legislative Affairs in the Pentagon in January 1975, where he helped present the budget for Naval Aviation Programs to mem- bers of Congress and their Staffs. Before reporting to USS NIMITZ as Executive Officer, Captain Macke completed the Navy Nuclear Power Propul- sion training syllabus at Orlando, Florida, Idaho Falls, ldaho, and Washington, D.C. Captain Macke's personal decorations and awards in- clude: the Meritorious Senfice Medal, 14 StrikefF,light Air Medals, one individual Air Medal, two Navy Commendation Medals, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, and various senfice and campaign medals. He is also a member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots. Captain Macke is married to the former Barbara Gabbe of Leonardtown, Maryland. They have two daughters, Belinda and Melissa. ln July, 1981, Captain Macke was relieved as Executive Officer in USS NIMITZ, and reported to USS CAMDEN CAOE-21, in Bremerton, Washington as Commanding Officer. 21
